NIL’s immense role in helping college athletes secure their career

The NCAA always restricted college athletes from profiting off of their personal brand for years, but NIL’s rule change in 2021 changed the whole landscape. College athletes can now not only monetize their own brands but also sign deals with multinational companies.

Signing endorsement deals, and getting sponsorship had become much more easier for the athletes as they supported their careers in sports. In its first year of establishment, the college athletes reportedly earned $917 million in endorsements, with some top athletes earning seven figures as per Icon Source.

One of the most talked about athletes to earn millions from NIL deals is Olivia Dunne. With an estimated net worth of $3.5 million, Livvy became a force to reckon with in this game. She not only earned millions both financially and in followers but also taught college athletes how to leverage NIL to their advantage.

She, alongside Angel Reese, formed LSU’s athletic brand with On3’s NIL valuation marked Livvy as the 3rd most earned college athlete. However, her 3rd rank far outreaches her fame with respect to her faithful online and offline audience. While many have questioned Dunne’s earnings and college standing, the athlete stood tall to face and answer all criticism.

In her defense, she stated, “People need to understand that I’ve worked for everything I’ve earned.” Starting from building an audience to “brands pay me for what they believe is worth” it’s been a long journey. Nevertheless, her demographic both financially and in fame outweighs all online criticism.

With NIL widening the horoscope for college athletes, more changes are bound to come. A wave of new starts will surely cause security to several students who aim to pursue sports careers in the future. The docuseries ‘The Money Game’ will further illuminate the changes and advantages NIL has brought to the sports sphere. It’ll be a series worth the watch for all aspiring athletes.
