A total of three swimmers of the University of Wyoming swimming team have been killed in a devasting car crash. This incident is reported to have taken place on Thursday afternoon.
As per reports, a total of five members of the team were traveling on the US 287 highway. During their unofficial school trip, the car would get involved in a massive crash, leaving three athletes dead and two severely injured.

According to The Guardian, the three athletes who unfortunately passed away were later identified as Charlie Clark (19), Luke Slabber (21) and Carson Muir (18). While Clark and Muir were both Americans, Slabber was a foreign-exchange student from South Africa. One of the surviving members is the driver of the car himself.
The investigation reports claimed the five athletes were in a Toyota RAV4 and heading near Red Mountain Road when the incident occurred. The car later drove off the road and rolled over several times, thus causing this massive wreck.
Further investigation in this matter is currently ongoing. The police have not ruled out foul play and other factors such as speeding, distractions and impairment.

Following this incident, several users on social media paid their tributes to the young athletes. Popular former University swimmer Riley Gaines joined them and called it an ‘unthinkable tragedy’.

Gaines who herself was a swimmer was severely affected by this incident. Taking to her X account, she would express her grief over the loss of this athletes and offered her condolences.

This untimely passing of three athletes from University of Wyoming has left the institution stunned. Their deaths come at a time when other members of the team competed at the Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships in Houston.
During the Championships event, the rivals of Wyoming were later spotted expressing grief as well. They would paint their bodies with the words “WYO” with a heart symbol, while coming together with them in this tragic times.
This is though not the first time that a major accident involving school students had taken place at this dangerous road. Previous incidents in 2001, 2010 and 2021 bring the total number to 15 students, who tragically lost their lives at this site.
