2028 Olympics host city Los Angeles to host a major athletics event in 2023
As Los Angeles has started gearing up to host Olympic Games soon, the city has big plans for evolving athletics and track and field events. The motive behind this new event is to celebrate the sport of track and field while honoring the former Olympic legends.
Known as the Los Angeles Grand Prix, this new event will take place in May 2023 at UCLA’s Drake Stadium. Further details of this event have been revealed by the legendary Olympic coach Bobby Kersee and the Grand Prix’s funding partner Internet Brands/WebMD Impact Fund. This event is being organized in partnership with USA Track and Field (USATF).
Bobby Kersee is considered one of the greatest Olympic coaches for training his wife, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, to win three Olympic gold medals. Joyner Kersee, considered one of the most remarkable women Olympians, will be part of the host committee for this event.

Los Angeles will be hosting a major athletics event to honor the Olympic legends
The LA Grand Prix (not to be confused with the Grand Prix of Long Beach of IndyCar) is a new event by the USATF to encourage and spread the sport of track and field around the country. Several Olympic legends will be part of this event, including Bobby and Joyner Kersee, will be actively participating in this event.
As a description for this event, USATF says, “Designed as a no-holds-barred, maximum-energy celebration of the sport, the LA Grand Prix will consist of a daytime international track meet and fan festival, and the USATF Legends Jam, a dazzling night-time musical experience combing performances from renowned artists and appearances from some of the biggest legends in track and field.”
This new event will be a part of a significant line of gold-label events that the USATF plans to organize. Regarding this event, Bobby Kersee says, “LA used to be the pinnacle of the track and field world – and we intend to reignite that passion in one of the largest and most successful running communities in the world.”The legendary coach is known for training several other Olympic gold medalists, such as Florence Griffith and Gail Devers.
A percentage of the funds raised from this event will be dedicated to funding athletic development and youth athletics. The LA Grand Prix is scheduled on May 26 and will start with the USATF Distance Classic. The following day will be an international gold-label meeting of athletes. The event plans to bring some of the biggest legends of track and field and athletics to the games being conducted. The event will also be hosting a program called the Legends Jam to honor sportspersons who have left a large impact on track and field and the communities.
