Russia has faced several sanctions from the International community ever since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. From economic to diplomatic sanctions, the repercussions of the same have cost Moscow heavily in several regards. Currently, Ukraine is urging the International forum to call for a ban on Russian athletes in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.
The Russian sports minister has responded to Ukraine’s call for the ban this Saturday and has remarked it as ‘unacceptable.’ The Russian minister Oleg Matystin says that such attempts by Ukraine are a way to “destroy the unity of international sport and the international Olympic movement.”
When the International Olympic Committee’s President Thomas Bach did not reiterate the demand from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine termed the IOC as a perpetrator of war. The International community has agreed upon Russian and Belarusian candidates to participate under a neutral flag.
Russia vehemently opposes Ukraine’s call to ban athletes from the Olympics 2024

The Russian sports minister Oleg Matystin is very much against Ukraine’s call to ban Russian athletes from the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. The minister says, “We see a blatant desire to destroy the unity of international sport and the international Olympic movement.”
Calling upon Ukraine’s call for boycotting Russia, Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee, says that such an action would be contrary to the principles that the Olympics Committee stands for.
On this regard, President Zelensky remarks, “the mere presence of representatives of the terrorist state is a manifestation of violence and lawlessness.” The Russian minister responded by saying, “It would be better to organise sport within countries and do everything necessary to make sport an ambassador of peace and build bridges between nations.”
Previously, through a tweet, President Zelensky’s close aide Mykhalo Podolyak called the IOC a ‘promoter of war; and blamed Russia’s participation in holding the Olympics as a platform for promoting genocide.
Ukrainian minister Dmytro Kuleba had once again brought forward how most of the Russian medals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were grabbed by personnels from the Central Sports Club of the Russian Army. This, the minister believes, is a sign of how the IOC is a ground for allowing atrocious elements to take the ground during the Olympics.
Several Nordic countries support Ukraine’s pursuit of boycotting Russia from the sporting forum. However, others in the International community think Russian and Belarusian athletes can participate under a neutral flag in the upcoming Olympics.
Russia was already banned from participating in the Olympics following a scandalous performance-enhancing drug-related issue sponsored by the state. Since then, the athletes have participated under the banner of the Russian Olympics Committee (ROC) in the subsequent events.
