Former American swimming star Jamie Cail has been found dead under mysterious circumstances at her home in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cail, 42, used to reside with her boyfriend, and the cause of her death is still uncertain at this point.

The US Virgin Islands Police Department has taken this case up for further investigation. As per their statement, Cail’s bizarre death will now be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the police forces. Her boyfriend was at a bar and found Cail passed out on the floor when he went to check on her after midnight.

The police have currently not revealed further details about the identity of the boyfriend. A friend rushed Cail to the hospital but the swimmer could not be saved. She was pronounced dead on arrival at 2.40 AM at the hospital. The police say, “Once at the clinic, CPR was rendered and 911 was notified, however, the female succumbed to her ailment.”

Jamie Cail, a Claremont, New Hampshire native, was part of several prestigious swimming tournaments in her heydays. She won gold in the relay race at the Pan Pacific Championships, in 1997. Furthermore, she also won a silver medal at the 1998-99 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Brazil.

A family friend describes Cail, “She was just…a very beautiful person. She had a huge heart. She was really loving and kind and well-loved and popular on the island and everybody knows her.” Cail worked at a coffee shop in St.John, US Virgin Islands.

Cail has attended the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida which is renowned for its swimming program. She has created several records for swimming in her school, some of which still stands to this date. Cail has also won high school state championships in Huntington Beach, California while training with the Golden West Swim Club.

In University, Cail had signed a letter of intent to swim for the University of South California. She was also a member of the University of Maine’s swim team in the 2000-2001 season. A sociologist at the University of Toronto, Jooyoung Lee, who was a teammate of Cail writes on Twitter, “Jamie had an unmatched work ethic. She left everything in each practice and became a world-class distance swimmer through grit. Rest in peace to a real one.”

The swimming and sports fraternity is greatly saddened by the loss of Jamie Cail, with several veterans and fans offering their condolences for the same.
