PV Sindhu has had a dominating run in the Olympics thus far. In her first game, she got past Israel’s Kmsenia Polikarpova in straight sets Thereafter, she defeated Hong Kong’s Ngan Yi Cheung in the same manner on Wednesday. On Thursday, Sindhu got past Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in the Round of 16.

The 26-year-old had a tough start to the first set, as the Danish shuttler took a 16-15 lead initially. However, Sindhu stepped on the gas to win the first set 21-15. The second set was relatively easier as she won 21-13 after taking a 5-0 lead to start with.

Yamaguchi, on the other hand, made a thunderous beginning to her campaign, having defeated Mahoor Shahzad in straight sets. The Japanese thumped the Pakistan shuttler 21-3, 21-8 in the Group L match. She followed it up with another resounding show against Great Britain’s Kirsty Gilmour.

Gilmour gave her a run for her money in the second set, but Yamaguchi won the set 21-18. Her Round of 16 match against Korea’s Kim Gaeun turned out to be a closely fought affair. Though the Japanese player won in straight sets, she had to work hard for the 21-17, 21-18 victory.

In their last seven meetings since March 2018, while Sindhu has won three times, Yamaguchi has come out trumps four times. Earlier this year in March at the All England Open, Sindhu won 16-21, 21-16 and 21-19 against Yamaguchi.

Prediction

The 2016 Rio Olympics’ silver medallist PV Sindhu should be able to win in another three-set thriller, though Yamaguchi will be a tough nut to crack.
