Mikey Musumeci is one of the most elite grapplers in the world. The BJJ Black Belt is gearing up to fight legendary Shinya Aoki at One Fight Night 15 in an openweight grappling contest. Ahead of his fight against Aoki, Musumeci talked to FirstSportz about his preparation and health. He spoke about a hospital visit in the interview. Musumeci follows a pasta and pizza diet. However, they were not the culprit for such a hospital visit.
Mikey Musumeci said, “The training camp has been good. Then I got very sick. I was in the hospital for four days last week. So, I am battling lot of things. But I’m excited for the opportunity to face a legend.” Musumeci explained the reason for the hospital visit. He said, “I had a very bad food poisoning. I had this watermelon and it made me sick. I had a very bad diarrhea and had a horrible fever and I thought I was gonna die.”
Musumeci revealed that he could not train for two weeks and needed one proper training session to compete against Shinya Aoki at One Fight Night 14. The BJJ Black Belt revealed the reason for fighting despite being sick. He said, “It is a challenge for sure. I am not supposed to be here. I am supposed to be resting. But, I’m here fighting and I am going to show myself that even under unfortunate circumstance, I could do this and push myself to be the best.“
Combat sports have athletes with incredible mental strength. Mikey Musumeci embodied the warrior mentality and remains keen on pushing his limits. The veteran Shinya Aoki will provide much difficulty to Musumeci. However, the BJJ star remains hopeful of overcoming the odds and winning the openweight grappling bout.

UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns is an important figure in the BJJ community. Burns had a huge influence on Musumeci’s career. Mikey Musumeci started his BJJ journey at the age of 10. At the age of 27, Musumeci remains one of the decorated BJJ artists of his time.

Gilbert Burns awarded Musumeci his Black Belt when he was only 18. Burns spoke highly of Musumeci in an interview. Gilbert said, “He was very young, and I saw he was hungry. Technical-wise, he was very good.” Burns praised the mental approach of Musumeci during sparring or competition.
Musumeci captured gold medals in the BJJ World Championships in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021. He defeated Cleber Sousa for the inaugural One flyweight submission grappling championship. Since then, he has defended his title twice and will compete against legend Shinya Aoki at One Fight Night 14.
