Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya had a cordial relationship, particularly as the former signed with the latter’s promotion when he came to the USA. However, that changed, and the two have thrown shades at each other ever since. De La Hoya is now the promoter of Alvarez’s opponent. Therefore, the feud has escalated.

The former friends engaged in a war of words at the final press conference for Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia. De La Hoya drew first blood, mentioning negative things about the boxer after praising the undisputed boxing super middleweight champion.

He [Canelo Alvarez] has spent much of the last two months insulting me rather than promoting this fight...Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez, period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it's mine. So put some respect on it...Remember when Jaime was 21 years old and volunteered to step in against Triple G when Canelo failed two drug tests?

Golden Boy concluded his speech by predicting a victory for Jamie Munguia. The promoter had already revealed to Ariel Helwani that he would go against Alvarez, and he did it. The former 6 division world champion certainly infuriated Alvarez. Canelo wanted to confront Golden Boy, but the security intervened. Nonetheless, he threw shade at his ex-promoter when he got the opportunity.

Alvarez also claimed his lawyers saved Gennady Golovkin from Oscar De La Hoya’s plan to rob him. De La Hoya was nonchalant throughout and urged Alvarez to focus on Munguia rather than him.

Canelo Alvarez was De La Hoya’s golden ticket to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. After failing to beat Mayweather, De La Hoya promoted multiple fighters from across the globe to give Mayweather his first defeat. However, he failed miserably, but a 23-year-old Alvarez was the closest that came to.

Nonetheless, the two have become bitter enemies, evidenced by the recent verbal altercation. In his recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, De La Hoya revealed why he thought Alvarez didn’t like him.

I seriously think that he [Canelo Alvarez] doesn't like the attention taken away from him. I seriously think that, you know, because every time, I'm remembering now, every time I would be around Canelo or, you know, I mean, I'm a 10-time world champion in six divisions, gold medalist like, you know, taking the attention away from him and this and that... And so he doesn't want me around.
