Just like Paige Bueckers, Minnesota residents were in for a rude shock when they learnt of a tragic shooting that took place at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
The shooter, later identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a graduate of the school, opened fire through its stained-glass windows as students and school staff were celebrating the start of school mass.
The transgender shooter killed 2 children while injuring 14 others. Three elderly parishioners were also wounded. The shooter was later declared dead from self-inflicted injuries. But it left the community in shock.
Investigations are already underway to determine Westman’s motive. There is also hope that the injured students and parishioners will survive and recover with proper care.
Paige Bueckers was going through shootaround before their game against the Connecticut Sun. Knowing how her home in Minneapolis is just 10 minutes away from the site of this shooting, Melissa Triebwasser asked the WNBA rookie for a comment.
I’ve been sending prayers. It’s just really unfortunate. I hope there are stricter gun laws put into place so parents don’t have to worry about sending their kids to school, people don’t have to worry about attending church, and all these places are safe. It’s just really unfortunate that gun violence continues to be an issue.

The Dallas Wings star reiterated that nothing is being done to control guns as more and more such incidents continue to engulf the country. The 23-year-old wants people to pray that such violence does not continue in the country.
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve echoes Paige Bueckers’ sentiment
Minnesota residents were the most impacted by this. The Minnesota Lynx play at Target Center, which is 6 miles north of Annunciation Catholic School. Andrew Dukowitz caught up with head coach Cheryl Reeve and asked her for a comment.
It’s such an indictment of our society, our lack of regard for life. There are things that we can do about it, and we don’t, but for some reason as Americans, we value something different. It’s sickening. It’s sad for the kids, it’s sad for the kids that have to grow up like this. It’s sad for the kids to walk through the door and not know what’s going to happen.
Cheryl Reeve said

The 58-year-old head coach was in her usual fiery self when talking about this incident. She believes that as human beings, one cannot do anything for those who have lost their lives.

She hopes Americans understand the true value of life and help fix this problem instead of focusing on something else. Reeve said she and her team were hurting just like those impacted by this incident.
Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx release joint statement
Before Cheryl Reeve and Paige Bueckers had a chance to speak about this incident, the Minnesota Lynx and Timberwolves rolled out a joint statement condemning the shooting.
We are deeply heartbroken by the tragic shooting that occurred this morning during a school Mass in our Minneapolis community… No child should ever feel unsafe in a place of learning or worship, and no family should endure such unimaginable loss.

The teams, jointly owned by Marc Lore and baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, joined other sports teams from Minnesota to offer prayers and support.
This shooting has impacted the people of the city of Minneapolis, and the lawmakers have asked residents to give city services space to carry out their work.
The Lynx lost their game to the Seattle Storm the following night by a score of 93-79. The loss will not affect their standing as they still lead the league. If they win 3 more games, they will stay top this season.
