Jannik Sinner is one of the top-ranked players who withdrew from the Canadian Open, scheduled to start on July 28. This has been met with some criticism, but his compatriot Paolo Bertolucci thinks the World No.1 has made the right decision.

Sinner will be kicking off his campaign on the North American swing at the Cincinnati Masters, which will start on August 5. Last year in the American events, the 23-year-old lost to eventual runner-up Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open, but he ended up winning the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, beating home favorites Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, respectively.

Sinner was last seen in action at Wimbledon, which he ended in his favor by beating his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz in four sets, avenging his French Open defeat. Sinner and the other top players have been continuously playing tennis since the clay swing (Sinner played the last two events, skipped the rest because of his doping ban). He is now recharging his batteries, and Bertolucci thinks it’s very important for the young Italian to enjoy some time off the courts to make a strong return to the courts. Bertolucci said on Repubblica:

Anyone who doesn’t understand this and is worried about losing 200 ranking points means they don’t know the rules of tennis. It’s vital. You can’t push yourself to the max every week, every tournament. That doesn’t exist. The goals for a player like Sinner are the Slams, and that’s it.

Sinner has so far played five tournaments this year. After defending his Australian Open crown by beating Alexander Zverev in straight sets, Sinner stayed three months on the sidelines due to the doping ban he received from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

He made his comeback at the Italian Open, only to progress to the final and lose to Alcaraz. The World No.1 then scheduled his career’s first Grand Slam final against Alcaraz.

He was on the verge of winning as he had a two-set lead and also three championship points. But he ended up squandering both, and Alcaraz eventually defended his title in five hours and 29 minutes- the longest French Open final in history.

Goran Ivanisevic on who is better between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz holds an 8-5 head-to-head lead over Jannik Sinner, and before Wimbledon, he had won five consecutive matches against him. But according to Novak Djokovic‘s former coach Goran Ivanisevic, Sinner is playing better tennis than the Spaniard.

Sinner was better, and in my opinion, he is currently a slightly better player than Alcaraz, and the two of them are five spears ahead of everyone else. The only one who can maybe fight with them is Novak Djokovic, but the others don’t have a chance. Sinner is better, tougher, I don’t know what tactics I would play against Sinner, he has an answer for everything.

Goran Ivanisevic told Croatian outlet Gol

Djokovic was defeated by Sinner in the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon. Also for the first time since 2017, he has failed to reach the final of Wimbledon.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, was denied a three-peat at SW19 by the four-time Grand Slam champion. His victory would have made him the second player, Bjorn Borg, to complete the Channel Slam for consecutive seasons.

Djokovic has lifted just one title this season- the Geneva Open. Sinner has won the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz is the winner of five titles. He has also reached two more finals. He and Djokovic, just like Sinner, have pulled out of the Canadian Open.
