Youngest Para-Badminton Player to Qualify for Tokyo Paralympics, Palak Kolhi’s Bio, Career Achievements and more

India is sending its largest ever contingent to the Paralympics this year, and as para badminton makes its debut at the Tokyo Paralympics, the strong team of 7 Indian shuttlers will all be looking to finish on the podium this year. Among these is the youngest shuttler to qualify for the Tokyo Paralympics, Palak Kolhi, at the age of just 19.

Hailing from Jalandhar, Punjab, Kolhi became the only woman to qualify for both the women’s singles and doubles event this year. She also created history by becoming the youngest para badminton player ever to qualify for the 2021 Paralympics. Kolhi and her partner Parul Parmar have qualified for the SL3-SU5 women’s doubles event, while Kolhi has qualified for the SU5 women’s singles event as well.

The youngster is currently training at Gaurav Khanna Excellia Badminton Academy, Lucknow, which is the first professional para badminton academy in India. Kolhi has practiced even during the lockdown, and while being away from her family was tough for her, it has ultimately paid off, as she makes her way to the Paralympics this year.

Palak is training under Gaurav Khanna, who is also the national coach for Indian Para-Badminton with her doubles partner Parul Parmar, who are the youngest-oldest Olympic duo in badminton.

Palak hails from Jalandhar Punjab, and completed her education from St. Joseph’s Convent School. She comes from a Hindu-Punjabi family, and she likes to keep her life private, therefore her parents and siblings names are unknown.

Palak burst on to the badminton scene in 2019 when she took home the gold medal in the SU5 women’s doubles events, and a silver in the SU5 women’s singles event at the BWF Para-Badminton International held in Uganda. Later that year she also took home a bronze medal in the women’s doubles once again, this time at the International tournament held in Japan.

Palak took home a silver medal in the women’s doubles at the 2020 BWF Para-Badminton International in Peru. 2021 saw her take home take a silver medal in the women’s singles event at the 2021 BWF Para-Badminton International in Dubai. She also took home 2 bronze medals in the women’s doubles and the mixed doubles categories.

Kolhi is one of the rising stars of badminton in India, as she hopes to continue her fine form and winning streak to finish on the podium at the Tokyo Paralympics.
