Rafael Nadal vs Tommy Paul: Preview

Indoor Hard-court season is that part of the season when Rafael Nadal rarely likes playing much as he has already told that winning majors will be his most important goal from now on. Paris Masters is one of the 2 ATP-1000 masters tournaments that Nadal has never won in his career along with the Miami Masters. The Spanish tennis star reached the final once here in 2007 but lost to David Nalbandian. He reached the semi-finals in both of his previous appearances back in 2019 and 2020.
As Nadal has decided to play Paris Masters 1000 and ATP Tour finals in Turin, he has a significant possibility of bagging the year-end world No.1 crown for the 6th time in his career (equalling Pete Sampras). Each round wins in either of these tournaments can only gain him points as he has not played both tournaments last year due to a foot injury.
However, despite going through a slew of injuries, Rafael Nadal and his fans have had a remarkable 2022– the year of redemption by winning the Australian Open after 13 years, followed by the record 14th title in Roland Garros.
25-year-old American Tommy Paul has not been able to win any ATP titles this season and his win-loss record for the season is 37-26. Stockholm Open 2021 is the last tournament he won in his career. Despite that, the American was able to get his career-highest singles ranking of 28 last month and was able to bang 3 of the 7 matches he played against a Top-10 player this season.
His best performance in a Grand Slam tournament in 2022 was in a 4th round appearance at Wimbledon, where he lost to the British World No.13 Cameron Norrie. During the US Open, he had to play 3 consecutive 5-setters in the first 3 rounds. He made 2 epic wins against Spanish World No.78 Zapata Miralles and Compatriot World No.33 Sebastian Korda in the first 2 rounds respectively before losing to Norwegian World No.4 Casper Ruud in Round 3.
Nadal vs Paul: Prediction

Rafael Nadal had one of his best seasons in 2022. If not for that abdomen injury he sustained during Wimbledon, he might have been able to pull off a sensational Wimbledon crown too in an already incredible year. But his body failed him once again, like a lot of times in his career.
The same injury was not fully healed even during the US Open and he was knocked out by French World No.21 Frances Tiafoe in the pre-quarterfinals. In between this, he and his wife Maria became parents for the first time as well.
Tommy Paul has looked out of sorts recently until the first-round victory here against Spanish World No.20 Roberto Bautista Agut. He lost consecutively against Swedish World No.74 Mikael Ymer and Austrian World No.100 Dominic Thiem in the second round of the Stockholm Open and the first round of the Vienna Open, respectively. He was leading 5-2 against Thiem and even had had 2 match points in the tie-breaker.
Nadal and Paul have played against each other once and the Spanish GOAT was able to seal the deal in straight sets then. But this match will entirely be upon how Nadal will be able to serve. His Serve has been lacking speed ever since the abdomen tear happened during the Wimbledon quarter-final. With that being said, now it’s safe to say that it’s definitely going to be an extremely close encounter.
Prediction: Nadal is to win in 3 sets
