Four weeks into the 2024 NFL season, the race to win the MVP award has begun to take shape. Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by quarterbacks, and atop the list sits a familiar name, Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has led his team to a dominant 4-0 start to the season despite getting average production from his receivers.
Currently, Mahomes has 904 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions with a QBR of 52.9. He ranks 11th in terms of passing yards and 5th in terms of touchdowns thrown. He has had his set of struggles this season and yet, is leading the MVP race. Following him are Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, C.J. Stroud, and Sam Darnold on The Athletic’s MVP odds.
This is surprising considering there are 10 quarterbacks who have more passing yards. Geno Smith leads the league with 1182 yards and is followed by Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott who have 1130 and 1072 yards respectively.
For context, the odds are not in favor of Sam Darnold, who has led the Vikings to a 4-0 record in the NFC North. His career has had a resurgence as the quarterback has 932 yards and leads the NFL with 11 touchdowns.
Fans are unhappy with Patick Mahomes’ leading MVP race
Josh Allen coming in at number 2 is justified as the Buffalo Bills quarterback has led his team atop the AFC East. He has 814 yards and has thrown 7 touchdowns, the third-most in the NFL, but this is what makes him a worthy candidate. He does not have a single turnover so far this season.

Despite better performances from other quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes continues to lead the list. Fans are not happy with this because although the Chiefs are undefeated, the defense has contributed more to their wins than the offense, which has at best been average. Here’s how they reacted to it via X:

Sam Darnold should be front runner and it’s not even close. This shows what the media bias effect does for these awards.

HOW AND WHY IS MAHOMES IN THE CONVERSATION
— ?????? (@SkiMaskChris_) October 2, 2024
There are quite a few candidates worthy of being in the MVP race this season, yet the odds favor the big names such as Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. The latter’s stock has fallen significantly because of the Bengals’ struggles. The only reason that Mahomes is on here is owing to the Chiefs’ undefeated record.
