Serena Williams has been missing in action, ever since her Australian Open semifinal loss to Naomi Osaka in February. The 39-year is expected to make her comeback soon, in order to regain match-fitness before the all-important French Open 2021 which takes place in May-June.
Patrick Mouratoglou, coach of Serena Williams has given a major update on Serena Williams’ schedule for the clay court season. In an interview with L’Equipe, the coach stated that Serena would come to her academy in France, and expects her to resume his training soon. Patrick expects the 23 time Grandslam champion to play at the Italian Open 2021, which will be held in lead-up to the French Open.
Serena Williams opted out of Madrid Open
Serena Williams had earlier opted out of the Mutua Madrid Open 2021, citing personal reasons concerning the tournament director. The American will compete at the Italian Open 2021, which will be held from May 9 to May 16, 2021. Serena will chase her 24th Grandslam title at the French Open this year, which will help her draw level to Margaret Court’s record of most singles’ titles won.
Last time, Serena Williams participated at the French Open, she had to withdraw from the second round last year. The veteran cited an Achilles issue for her decision, and will hope to do well on clay courts this season. She has played just two tournaments this year, and has been knocked out of the semifinals on both occasions. However, at the WTA 500 event in Melbourne, she had to withdraw from her semifinal clash against Ashleigh Barty, citing a right shoulder injury.
