Jannik Sinner will not be playing the Davis Cup for this decision; he was criticized a lot by the Italian tennis community. Despite undoubtedly being the most successful player from Italy, what angered them was that he put singles ahead of representing his country.
But not everyone censured him, as several former ATP players from the country rushed to his defense, saying he has the right to choose what he wants to play and not because tennis, at the end of the day, is an individual sport. Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, also joined people who are supporting the four-time Grand Slam champion’s decision.
Leave Jannik Sinner alone. That’s what I’ve been telling people since he announced he would skip the Davis Cup, at home. I’ve read that he might even skip Paris to focus on the ATP Finals even if that no longer seems to be relevant today, base on his latest quote in Vienna. And yes, to some people, that sounds shocking, especially when you see him play an exhibition but not a Masters 1000 or the Davis Cup. But let’s take a step back.

Sinner has confirmed that he will be playing in the Paris Masters, scheduled to start on November 27. He skipped the event last year.
I actually think it’s a good thing. Not that he skips Davis Cup specifically, but that top players today finally have the freedom to make their own choices. For too long, tennis players have been living under a mandatory schedule. But players aren’t machines. They know their bodies. They know when to push, when to rest, and when it’s time to protect their future.

Sinner, who made his Davis Cup debut in 2021, has two titles already to his name, lifting them in 2023 and 2024 with his team, beating Australia and the Netherlands, respectively. The 24-year-old did not lose a match, singles or doubles, in the previous two Davis Cup Finals.
Flavio Cobolli shares a message after losing to Jannik Sinner at the Vienna Open
Jannik Sinner is in Vienna, chasing his fourth title of the season. He first breezed past Germany’s Daniel Altmaier to schedule his career’s first-round encounter with compatriot Flavio Cobolli. Sinner was on the cusp of losing the second set, but he eventually clinched it in his favor to reach the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old took to social media to share a message after the defeat.

What a battle, what an atmosphere. Proud of my level today! A special match against a special player.

After Cobollo, the reigning Wimbledon champion, knocked out Alexander Bublik in straight sets, improving his head-to-head record to 6-2. Sinner has now scheduled a semifinal match against third seed Alex de Minaur, who has a match against the Italian.
The Aussie has met Sinner 11 times, with the last two encounters being this year’s quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the China Open. Before scheduling the match against Sinner, de Minaur knocked out Matteo Berrettini.
Sinner is chasing his second title at the Vienna Open, winning it in 2023 by defeating Daniil Medvedev. De Minaur has clinched one title this year- the Citi Open by beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He also played the final of the Rotterdam Open but lost the match to six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner also has an ATP 500 title to his name. He breezed past Learner Tien in the China Open final to win his second title in the tournament.
