Carlos Alcaraz’s recent loss to Jannik Sinner has raised some concerns about the Spaniard’s performance. The 22-year-old fell to the Italian star in straight sets at the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament. Patrick Mouratoglou has revealed that there’s cause for concern about the World No.1’s game.

Alcaraz has dominated his head-to-head meetings with Sinner on tour. In fact, he has won six of their last seven tour meetings, including two Grand Slam finals. But after Alcaraz defeated the World No. 2 at the US Open, Sinner revealed that he was now focused on becoming unpredictable on the court.

Sinner’s improvement was noticeable at the Six Kings Slam, where he faced Alcaraz in the final of the exhibition tournament. There he outplayed the six-time Grand Slam champion, beating Alcaraz 6-2, 6-4 to win the title for the second consecutive year. But after the match, Alcaraz’s poor display became a major topic of discussion.

He failed to break Sinner throughout the match, which was rare considering his level of performance in their last four meetings. Also, last month, he lost to Taylor Fritz for the first time in his career at the Laver Cup. He fell to the American star in straight sets in San Francisco, but earned his revenge a few days later in Tokyo.

In a video posted on Instagram, Mouratoglou revealed that despite Alcaraz’s consistent display on the court this season, some fans are worried after his loss to Sinner. The former coach of Serena Williams said that there’s no cause for alarm about Alcaraz as there’s no extra motivation for him to win exhibition matches:

I’ve seen some commentaries online of people who were worrying about Carlos because he lost two matches lately. Calm down. I think it’s the same phenomenon when Carlos plays an exhibition and when he’s in the second round of a Grand Slam. Because he knows that first of all, the fact that it’s one set all is going to give him extra motivation and the flame will come back, and second, when there is no flame, he doesn’t find the resources.

Alcaraz withdrew from the Rolex Shanghai Masters days after winning his maiden Tokyo Open in Japan. The ATP 500 title was his eighth crown of the season. He has won two Grand Slams, three Masters 1000 titles and three ATP 500 crowns this season. He’s currently the player with the most titles this year in the men’s circuit.

Carlos Alcaraz has been the best men’s player this season by far. With eight titles to his name, he has dominated the ATP Tour, reaching ten finals in the process. However, he has often struggled playing in indoor hard court tournaments, especially during the European indoor events.

He’s currently at the Paris Masters, training ahead of the tournament kickoff on Monday (October 27). He has won eight ATP Masters 1000 titles over the course of his career but has never lifted the Rolex Paris Masters. The tournament has often proved to be a tricky place for the 22-year-old to get results.

In fact, his best result at the event was in 2022, when he reached the quarter-finals before losing to Holger Rune. Last year, he crashed out in the third round following a shocking defeat to eventual runners-up Ugo Humbert. He will be hoping to play his best tennis at the tournament considering he has not played in any tour-level competition since the Tokyo Open.

He will open his campaign in Paris in the second round against either Cameron Norrie or Sebastian Baez after earning a first-round bye. In the third round, he’s projected to face Valentin Vacherot or Jiri Lehecka, while a potential clash against Casper Ruud awaits him in the round of 16.
