Looks like Drake Maye has become NFL-ready in the eyes of head coach Jerod Mayo. They are reportedly starting next week’s game with him.

Despite drafting a third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, when the New England Patriots started the season with quarterback Jacoby Brissett, Mayo was very clear that the rookie was not ready for the league yet. However, after they sunk to the bottom of the AFC East with a 1-4 record, the team finally decided to make the changes.

A source close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that Maye is officially taking over the starting position in the Patriots as they prepare for the week 6 matchup against Houston Texans on the coming Sunday.

Brissett, who signed with New England for one year earlier this offseason, started the season with a victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, following all four matches has ended with a disappointment as they built a four-game losing streak.

Despite having the confidence of head coach Mayo, the veteran quarterback’s performance has been quite underwhelming. In the last five games of this season, Brissett has only managed 696 yards and two interceptions.

Jerod Mayo hints at quarterback changes after Patriots’ narrow loss to Dolphins

Before the recent 15-10 defeat against the Miami Dolphins, Mayo has always been lenient towards giving the veteran a chance to improve but following Sunday’s game, he hinted at some potential changes in the starting quarterback position. Given, that their playoff chances are at stake in the upcoming game against CJ Stroud’s Texans, who are standing atop in AFC South with a 4-1 record.

When I meet with the coaches today, it’s about [this:] we’re in a solution-driven business, and we aren’t playing good football. We have to look at every single unit and every single player and figure out how we use this roster to go out there and win games.

Having said that, he also addressed Brissett’s underwhelming performance and admitted “it just wasn’t good enough.” Although the defense and special team have played solid, the quarterback position has affected the entire offense. The next week’s game, which will be hosted by New England, will set the tone for the Patriots’ performance and may also impact their playoff odds.
