In Short
  • Mike Vrabel missed the Patriots' pre-draft press conference, leading Eliot Wolf to address reporters alone.
  • Wolf stated that Vrabel is focused on draft preparations and has been more involved than last year.
  • The controversy involving Vrabel and Dianna Russini remains sensitive, with potential implications for the coach.

Mike Vrabel missed the New England Patriots’ pre-draft press conference, leaving executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf to face the reporters alone on Sunday. The reason behind Vrabel’s absence is unclear, but the word around the league is that he decided to skip due to the ongoing Dianna Russini debacle.

When reporters asked Wolf to elaborate on Vrabel’s whereabouts, the veteran GM said his colleague, who also happens to be the head coach of the Patriots, is busy preparing for the draft.

[Mike Vrabel is] very involved. I mean, business as usual. He’s been in there. I’d say he’s been in there with us probably, this round of meeting, probably more than he was last year. This is me putting words in his mouth; he’s probably more comfortable just where things stand. But he’s been in there.

Wolf revealed

Wolf carefully steered clear of discussing the negative publicity involving Vrabel and the New York Times reporter Dianna Russini. Even though both are married, they were photographed hugging and spending time together at a luxurious resort in Arizona, popular among couples.

Initially, Vrabel and Russini downplayed the photo as innocent and harmless clicks. However, it soon became clear that there’s more to the story. The New York Times launched an investigation to uncover the secrets and sidelined Russini for the time being. Vrabel remains with the Patriots and, as Wolf mentioned, is busy with the X’s and the O’s of the draft.

[Mike] tries to watch every [college] player that we give to each position coach; he watches the whole [what we call the coaches’] list. So he has an opinion on these guys. It’s helpful because sometimes there are players that the scouts like, me included.

Vrabel and Wolf took as many as 11 players in the 2025 NFL draft. This included top picks, offensive lineman Will Campbell, running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Kyle Williams, offensive lineman Jared Wilson, safety Craig Woodson, defensive tackle Joshua Farmer, linebacker Bradyn Swinson, kicker Andres Borregales, offensive lineman Marcus Bryant, long snapper Julian Ashby, and defensive back Kobee Minor.

The Patriots qualified for the Super Bowl in Vrabel’s first year as head coach. After winning the AFC East, they defeated the Chargers, Texans, and the Broncos to set up a big showdown against the champions of the NFC, the Seattle Seahawks.

Campbell and Wilson struggled to contain the Seahawks’ pass rush. Campbell alone allowed a record 14 pressures on quarterback Drake Maye, resulting in six sacks, four turnovers, and two interceptions. The Seahawks won 29-13.

Reporter speculates whether Mike Vrabel can receive punishment for the Dianna Russini debacle

The situation is very sensitive, and the Patriots must make any move with extreme caution. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggested that Vrabel could be reprimanded based on two factors.

Before the photos surfaced on X, the Patriots showed increased interest in trading for AJ Brown, and the foremost expert on the matter appeared to be Russini. Nearly every week, she would report something new about the trade.

If [and this is only an example, not an accusation] Vrabel was affirmatively using Russini to agitate for an AJ Brown trade with the Eagles on the most favorable terms possible to the Patriots, the tampering rule could potentially apply.

Florio wrote

Florio further noted that if the investigation finds Russini sharing “material, non-public information harvested from other teams” at Vrabel’s request, then it will complicate the matter even more. The league could discipline him based on its personal conduct policy. For the moment, the Patriots have remained silent on the matter, but for how long?
