For almost half a century, Italy went without winning the Davis Cup. However, since Jannik Sinner became a member of the Italian team, things have changed. He ended their 48-year drought at the event last year and helped them retain the title this year. The 23-year-old mind-blowing dominance has caught the attention of Netherlands’ captain Paul Haarhuis.
The Davis Cup final tie between Italy and the Netherlands opened on the indoor courts at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena in Malaga. Matteo Berrettini led the Italians against Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp and didn’t waste time to dispatch his opponent 6-4, 6-2 to give Italy a 1-0 lead.
Jannik Sinner made sure that the Italians in the crowd kept on singing and drumming as he defeated Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (2), 6-2 to wrap up the Davis Cup victory. Italy became the first team since the Czech Republic in 2012 and 2013 to retain the Davis Cup. After Sinner finished off his win, Berrettini rushed to hug him as it was clear he was the key to the team’s success.
Sinner went four matches unbeaten at the Davis Cup, including the doubles tie victory with Berrettini against Argentina in the quarterfinals. During the Netherlands team press conference, captain Paul Haarhuis made a hilarious offer to Sinner.
I told him that we have a Dutch passport for him next year. We will do everything we can. Because he speaks German, it will be very easy for him to learn Dutch.

Sinner’s victory over Griekspoor was his 73rd of the season. The Italian only suffered six loss this year and won eight titles, including two Grand Slams and the ATP Finals. He also claimed his maiden year-end World No. 1.
Netherlands captain proud of his team performances at the Davis Cup after finishing second place
The Netherlands leave the Davis Cup having made history by reaching their first final at the event. The team did the almost impossible when they shockingly ousted Spain in the quarterfinals, despite being underdogs. They continued their run in the semifinals beating Germany 2-0.

In the final, they were nowhere at the level of the Italian team. However, the team’s captain, Paul Haarhuis, has revealed that he’s proud of their great performance throughout the week but hates to finish second place.
I don’t have a good relationship with second places. In fact, I have a hate relationship with second place. Nevertheless, tomorrow I will be proud of what we have achieved, but right now it feels like shit.
Paul Haarhuis said via Puntodebreak
The Dutch team wasn’t impressive in the Group phase in September, as a slight win gave them an edge over Belgium, which made them finish second. They have proven they can perform excellently and will look to continue in that direction in 2025.
