Paul Heyman is arguably the most important aspect of the Bloodline story right after Roman Reigns. He is one of the masterminds behind this intricate story. On-screen, he has been on the side of his Tribal Chief for nearly four years now. The 58-year-old has been off of TV for a while now and recently spoke about his return to WWE programming.
Speaking at a panel with Notsam Wrestling at WWE Fanatics Fest, the Hall of Famer was asked why he hadn’t returned to TV yet. He revealed that when he comes back to TV, it would be a huge moment setting up a year’s worth of storyline. There remain several questions about the relationship between Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns, such as why the OTC was not texting or calling his Wiseman back.
Heyman claimed that he would only come back when it was relevant for him to come back. The former Advocate for the Beast perhaps doesn’t feel that the Bloodline storyline needs him at the moment. He wants to come back when his presence is felt rather than simply being a background figure for Reigns.
I will come back when it is relevant for me to come back. When I'm needed to come back. When I can add to Roman Reigns and not just ride his coattails and hang off of his glory.Paul Heyman at Fanatics Fest
Heyman was taken out by The Bloodline and written off TV. Many fans expected him to appear when Reigns made his much-anticipated return at SummerSlam. However, the Wiseman was nowhere to be found. Likewise, Jimmy Uso has also not been seen on WWE TV since the SmackDown after WrestleMania.
Paul Heyman reveals the specialty behind The Bloodline Story and why it is ‘cinema’
During the same panel, Paul Heyman revealed that his mentality behind the Bloodline story is the same as when he was running ECW. He did not want to insult the fans’ intelligence. He believes that modern wrestling fans want more complex and intricate characters rather than bland baby faces or evil villains. This was a huge contrast to previous one-dimensional characters like Hulk Hogan.
Wrestling fans care about the characters involved in such storylines. Even the good guys have repugnant and negative attributes. Meanwhile, even the most vile bad guys will possess some redeeming qualities. Heyman did not want these stories to be black and white. Instead, there had to be a middle ground that was blurred from time to time.
So it's just a matter…of realizing that the way of pro wrestling/sports entertainment was being presented was done. It was draconian, it was antiquated, it was old, it was played out. And it was time for something new, and different, and fresh, and something that played to what the audience itself had been crying for.Paul Heyman during Fanatics Fest
The Hall of Famer believed that it was time for professional wrestling to witness something new rather than the old draconian and played-out storylines.
