Stephen Curry has been one of the standout performers in the NBA over the past decade. His consistent performances for the Golden State Warriors saw him become one of the best shooters ever. However, as he enters the final years of his career, some legends of the game have expressed their concern for the team.
Speaking on the KG Certified podcast, Boston Celtics legends Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce talked about Curry’s career with the Warriors. They discussed how the team won’t be the same once his time with them ends. While Garnett wanted Stephen Curry to leave so he can stop losing, Pierce was adamant the NBA star is building a legacy.
Warriors ain't gonna be the same... He's going down with that ship. It's all legacy, everything right now for him, is icing on the cake... Obviously he wanna win, but if you ain't got the personnel, you gotta be realistic... I saw Kobe, he lost his last couple years, but he still went hard... That's Steph, he carried that in Golden State.Paul Pierce said
According to Pierce, even though Curry desires winning another championship, he’s more loyal to his legacy with the Warriors. The Celtics legend also pointed out that the team doesn’t have what it takes to win an NBA title presently, while arguing further that Curry deciding to stay devoted to the Warriors is not new, as Kobe Bryant did the same for the Lakers.
The 36-year-old has two more years remaining on the contract he signed with the franchise back in 2021. He recently stirred up speculations from fans after updating his social media bio, omitting any references to the Warriors. Nonetheless, he continues to perform at an elite level, as evidenced by his contribution to USA’s gold medal win at the Paris Olympics.
Paul Pierce suggests Warriors get Giannis Antetokounmpo to keep NBA championship hopes alive
Speculation about star players jumping ship is inevitable when their team face challenges. This is especially the case for Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. And given that Klay Thompson has already joined the Dallas Mavericks, the issue now is whether the Warriors retain a team that can challenge for the NBA championship.
Indeed, this was a point Paul Pierce made on the podcast, while speaking about the Warriors roster.
They don't have a championship team right now. The only way I see Golden State getting back to where they need to get back to is if they could find a way to get Giannis [Antetokounmpo] over there.Paul Pierce said
Pierce’s suggestion that the Warriors acquire Antetokounmpo prompted Garnett to remark that Pierce had some inside information. However, Pierce clarified he had no knowledge and was merely stating what he thought.
His observation is a valid one though. With the current team, the Warriors aren’t contenders for a title run. Even with Thompson on the team last season, they didn’t make the playoffs, losing to the Sacramento Kings.
