Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling title fight called off for UFC 256
The UFC Bantamweight title fight between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling has been scheduled for UFC 256. Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan won the vacant UFC bantamweight title at UFC 251 in a fight against Jose Aldo and this was going to be his first title defense against Aljamain ‘Funk Master’ Sterling who is the number one contender in the Bantamweight division.
This news was disclosed by ESPN that title fight at UFC 256 has been called out for ‘undisclosed reasons’. It is said that ‘Yan is not injured’ but he is out of the fight due to some personal reasons. At UFC 255 UFC Flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo defended his title against Alex Perez with a spectacular victory in the very first round.
According to sources, Deiveson Figueiredo will be defending his title again in 21 days at UFC 256 against Brandon Moreno. Dana White also says, “We’re not letting him go back to Brazil we are planning to make another title defense for him at UFC 256”. Figueiredo and Moreno both also verbally agreed to face each other at UFC 256.
With Yan vs Sterling being called out, the fight between Figueiredo vs. Moreno will highlight the main event at UFC 256.
‘Funk Master’ Sterling claimed himself as interim champion
As soon as the news went out Aljamain Sterling tweets, “Everything happens for a reason. I hope everything is good with you and your family. Petr Yan, We will settle our business when you can be 100% focused and ready to give the fans the best show we can. See you soon”
He also poked about being the interim champion, Sterling also says, “Interim?”. He made a valid point although because Yan is out from the fight till next year and UFC can crown ‘Funk Master’ as interim champion.
