Rory McIlroy walked away as the winner of the 2025 Irish Open on Sunday following a playoff win over Joakim Lagergren. A PGA Tour winner would compare the Northern Irish golfer to Tiger Woods after his incredible putt on the final hole forced a playoff round.
On the final hole, McIlroy needed to make an eagle to force a playoff round. He was able to keep his cool and was successful in draining a massive 28-foot putt to tie up the Swedish golfer at 17-under par for the top.
The crowd at The K Club in Kildare, Ireland, would go into a frenzy as the 5-time major champion eagled the 72nd hole. A huge roar would erupt from the fans as his ball dipped into the hole. Check out a video regarding that below:

PGA Tour winner Michael Kim would later react to this putt and the crowd’s reaction. The 2018 John Deere Classic winner compared the reaction McIlroy got from the fans to the one Tiger Woods got in his career.
Wow, this sounded like a (dare I say it) Tiger roar

McIlroy and Lagergren were tied after the first 2 extra playoff holes. On the third hole, Lagergren would find the water hazard. This slip-up from him opened the door for his opponent.
The World No.2 would win the third playoff hole with two putts and captured his 4th win of the 2025 season. This is his 1st triumph since his famous win at the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National in April.
Rory McIlroy gets emotional following triumph in front of home fans
Rory McIlroy picked up his 2nd Irish Open crown on Sunday by beating Joakim Lagergren in the playoff round. Following the round, the former World No.1 was left emotional as he claimed an important win in front of his home fans.

The 36-year-old was the biggest name in the field this year. With his triumph at the Masters Tournament, the fans were eager to see their homegrown star take to the course and push for the title.
After his win, a reporter would ask him about his emotions. McIlroy, who won this event in 2016 in this same venue, was overcome with emotions and the support from the crowd. He would express his gratitude towards them and call himself “lucky“.
I feel just so lucky that I get to do this, I get to do this in front of these people. The support has been absolutely amazing all week. I thought it was going to be a nice homecoming, obviously coming home with a green jacket… but this has been absolutely incredible.

McIlroy did not have the best of starts in this tournament. In the first round, he fired a score of 1-under 71 after being rushed to play as he was put on the shot clock. He followed this up with a bogey-free score of 66 on Friday.
After another bogey-free round on Saturday, the golfer found himself in contention. A score of 66 in the final round with an eagle on the final hole earned him a playoff round against Lagergren. A birdie on the 3rd playoff hole sealed his win.
Rory McIlroy claims 2025 will go down as one of his best years
The year 2025 has been a good one for Rory McIlroy so far. After he captured his National Open, the golfer once again claimed that this year will go down as one of his best.

McIlroy’s 1st win of the season saw him claim the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am title. He claimed the signature event by finishing two shots ahead of his best friend Shane Lowry.
In March, he would claim his 2nd The Players Championship title. He overcame J.J. Spaun in the playoff round on Monday.
His biggest win, though, was the Masters Tournament triumph. At long last this year, he finally claimed a victory at the iconic Augusta National to win the green jacket and completed the career grand slam in the process.
The golfer is now eyeing an away Ryder Cup triumph. He previously claimed that a victory at the Bethpage Course in New York would make 2025 the best year of his career. After his win on Sunday, the 36-year-old expressed that no matter what happens next, this year will be one of his best of his golfing career.
To do what I did earlier in the year and then to come home and win my National Open, no matter what happens for the rest of the year, that’s a pretty cool year. 2025 is going to go down as one of the best, if not the best of my career.

Winning an away Ryder Cup will not be easy for McIlroy and his team. Team Europe has not won on American soil since the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012. In the last two visits, they have suffered huge defeats against the Americans.
