England forward Phil Foden admitted that he feels sorry for team manager Gareth Southgate, for the constant criticism aimed at him. Additionally, the forward called on the players to take responsibility for their inconsistent performances at Euro 2024.
The English manager has been subject to heavy criticism from fans and media over his team selection and tactics throughout the tournament. The team faces heightened pressure ahead of their quarter-final after narrowly defeating Slovakia in the Round of 16. Lackluster performances by the Three Lions have prompted some fans to call for the manager’s dismissal. Gareth Southgate, who has been under scrutiny, also faced booing and objects thrown by fans during matches.
Amid criticism, forward Phil Foden, however, acknowledged the difficulties England have faced and expressed empathy for Southgate. Speaking to reporters, the Man City star took responsibility for the team’s difficulties, stressing the importance of player leadership in addressing tactical issues on the field. He recognized the manager’s clear instructions but suggested that players should assume greater responsibility and adjust their pressing strategy during matches.

Moreover, reflecting on his season with City, he noted a shift to a midfield role had increased his goal-scoring and game-influencing capabilities.
