The 2025 Tour Championship is in the history books. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood finally claimed his first win on the PGA Tour with a spirited showing. His playing partner on Sunday, Patrick Cantlay, on the other hand, got ripped for his slow play. 6-time major champion Phil Mickelson would join in this and took a sarcastic jab at him.

The pace of play has been a major concern for the PGA Tour. This year, there were several instances where the topic of slow play came up during tournaments. Cantlay, the 8-time PGA Tour winner, has often found his name in such discussions.

While the golfing world celebrated the victory of Fleetwood this past Sunday, there were some who pointed out the slow play of Cantlay. Several social media users took a swipe at him for the time he took to hit his shots.

Broadcaster Jason Page would share a clip of Cantlay shuffling before hitting his shot on X. Phil Mickelson, who is highly active on social media, would come across this post and claimed that Cantlay shuffled 26 times. He then proceeded to take a sarcastic jab at him and claimed that this shuffling proved the peak physical fitness Cantlay was in.

He shuffled his right foot 26 times. 26 TIMES before he hit it. 26 x 36 other shots is 936 foot shuffles. That’s more calf raises than I’ll ever do. You also must be in peak physical condition to do this daily so let’s stop all the hate and appreciate that golfers are athletes

Cantlay entered the final round tied for the lead with Fleetwood. He ended up firing a score of 1-over 71 and finished as the runner-up alongside Russell Henley, while being 3 shots behind Fleetwood with a 15-under par score for the tournament.

Cantlay had a mixed year this season. In the 19 events he played, he made the cut in 16 of them and achieved 5 top-10 finishes.

His 3 missed cuts though were at the major championships. Following a T36 finish at the Masters Tournament, the 2021 FedEx Cup champion missed the cut at the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship.

After a runner-up finish at the Tour Championship, Cantlay took to his social media accounts to make his feelings known. In the post, he expressed that this was not the finish he was hoping for. He would then thanks the fans for their support.

Not the finish we wanted today but happy with how hard I fought to get back into contention. Thank you to all the fans who followed along this season. I can’t wait to get back out there!

Cantlay, who was one of the top performers for Team USA in 2023, failed to automatically qualify for the event this year. He is ranked 15th in the standings and needs to get picked by Bradley as one of his 6 picks to participate in the event this year.

Bradley, the U.S. Captain, is in contention himself. Following his win at the Travelers Championship, several people have urged him to take the playing captain role and pick himself as one of the 6 picks. It remains to be seen what he eventually decides and whom he picks.
