Pramod Kumar Chawla, the father of India and Mumbai Indians (MI) cricketer Piyush Chawla, passed away today. The leg-spinner who had returned home recently after the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) revealed the news on his Instagram handle.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been wreaking havoc in India as the second wave has proved to be unstoppable. As many as 4 lakh cases and more are being reported every day and the situation is well and truly dire in the country. There are also acute problems like shortage of oxygen and unavailability of hospital beds which are prevalent, leading to other nations looking at India with concern.
The pandemic was also the cause for the IPL to be suspended as it breached the teams’ bio-bubbles leading to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to indefinitely suspend the event. All players were then sent home safely with the exception of the Australians who are in Maldives.
Piyush Chawla announces sad news of father’s death
Piyush Chawla took to Instagram today to reveal the news of his father’s death writing, “With deepest grief, we announce that my beloved father Mr Pramod Kumar Chawla has left for the heavenly abode on 10th May, 2021. He was suffering from covid and post-covid complications. We invite your kind thoughts and prayers in this difficult times. May his noble soul rest in peace. (sic)“
Soon after the cricketer announced the news, his comments were filled with tributes and condolence messages from his fans, well-wishers and fellow cricketers. Players like RP Singh, Suresh Raina, Ishwar Pandey, Lalchand Rajput and Ankeet Bawne offered their condolences.
