Fans and players were left in tears after Hungarian forward Barnabas Varga suffered a life-threatening injury during the team’s match against Scotland. The 29-year-old was swiftly stretchered off the pitch, shielded by screens, in a highly distressing scene.
Hungary’s final group-stage match witnessed horrific scenes when star forward Barnabas Vargas went down on the ground after suffering a brutal collision. The Ferencvaros forward was rendered unconscious after colliding with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and defender Anthony Ralston, when they were attempting to reach a free-kick delivery into the box. Hungarian players immediately called for medical attention, causing the game to be halted for several minutes.
Medical personnel arrived onto the pitch, treating Varga behind a blanket curtain. He was then stretchered off the field, shielded by screens, with Hungarian skipper Dominik Szoboszlai assisting the physios. The Hungarian players, including their captain, appeared in tears as Varga was rushed to the hospital. The incident evoked memories of Christian Eriksen’s collapse at the Euro 2020, while playing for Denmark. Meanwhile, Varba is said to have sustained broken facial bones.

Scotland players Gunn and Ralston were also treated after the collision, and were able to continue the game for Scotland. Hungary scored a momentous 100th minute goal to seal a 1-0 victory, keeping their Euros 2024 hopes alive.
Hungary forward Barnabas Varga is ‘stable’ after suffering a horrific injury against Scotland at the Euros
The Hungarian football federation has confirmed that Barnabas Varga is ‘stable’ in the hospital. Ferencvaros, the club which Varga plays for in Hungary, reported that the forward sustained multiple broken bones and a concussion from his collision with Angus Gunn.
He will most require surgery, and will remain at the Stuttgart hospital. The nation’s football federation has assured the media that they will provide regular updates on his condition.
The 29-year-old forward is the only other player to have scored for Hungary in this year’s Euros. He made his debut for Hungary in March 2023, and has since earned 13 caps for his country. The whole football world is now praying for his swift recovery.
