Portugal made easy work of Robert Lewandowski and co. as Portugal beat them 3-1 in an exciting Nations League clash that could’ve tipped in either side’s favor. Both sides opened the game with intent as the Al-Nassr No.7 threatened to score in the early minutes.
After a valiant effort from Lukasz Skorupski denied the 39-year-old a brilliant long ranger, Portugal finally took the lead through Bernardo Silva. The moment that fans waited for came in the 37th minute as star man Cristiano Ronaldo bagged his 133rd international goal for Portugal.
With the goal on Saturday night, Ronaldo extended his lead at the top to having 24 goals more than eternal rival Lionel Messi. Ronaldo’s goal however, came from a moment of good fortune as a low and driven attempt from Rafael Leao hit the post and fell at the No.7’s feet. Tasked with the easy job of putting the ball into an unguarded net, Ronaldo did well to score in his 11th consecutive game.
The player also made headlines for a moment of kindness, when he asked ground security to stand off as he clicked a selfie with a pitch invader. Fans sang praise for the legend’s humility while others shared their excitement on his electric form this season.
Portugal claim 3-1 victory to go top of Nations League group
Group 1 in League A of the UEFA Nations League comprises a tough group involving Portugal, Croatia, Poland and Scotland. Cristiano Ronaldo led his side against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland at National Stadium Warsaw as the men in red claimed an important victory. Goals from Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and an unfortunate own goal handed Portugal all three points on the night.
Despite the score line, the game kept the audience on their feet throughout as Portugal only managed to steer clear of their opponents in the final minutes. In spite of taking the lead in the 26th minute through Silva and then extending it to 2-0 through their captain, Poland were a threat to Portugal throughout the game.
The hosts then clawed their way back into the game through a commendable effort from Piotr Zielinski. The final 20 minutes or so were nerve-racking for either side as the three points hung in the balance. Portugal finally pulled off to victory in the 87th minute when Jan Bednarek unfortunately directed a cross into his own net. The loss meant that Poland have just one win from three games in the group stage.
