Aston Villa hosted Southampton at Villa Park on Sunday. Both of the teams are very popular to watch as both of them play attacking football and regularly challenge the Top 6 of the Premier League. Danny Ings is the star player for Southampton ever since he moved from Liverpool while Jack Grealish leads Aston Villa.

Match Report

Danny Ings scored an absolutely delightful goal against Aston Villa

In what was a spectacular attacking display, Southampton put three goals past Aston Villa, with an earlier goal ruled out for offside. Jannik Vestergard opened the scoring in the third minute, but it was ruled out for offside. Later he scored a header from captain James Ward-Prowse’s free kick. James Ward-Prowse later tripled the scoring with two brilliant free kicks into the top right corner. He celebrated his birthday with two goals and an assist in the first half itself. Danny Ings later cut into his right and smashed the ball into the top right corner in the second half.

This surely should’ve killed the match for Aston Villa, but hope was there when Tyrone Mings scored a header. In the stoppage minutes Ollie Watkins scored a penalty and Jack Grealish scored from distance. However this late flurry of goals was not enough to ensure a comeback draw for them.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith lamented that his team had given up after the first half flurry of goals. According to him his players were of the assumption that Southampton was tactically superior, while in reality it was them exploiting chances from near range.

The win took Southampton to third place, joint on points with Everton and Wolves. Southampton next host Newcastle United while Aston Villa face Arsenal. Aston Villa’s back to back defeats meant that it slipped to 6th place, level on points with Chelsea and Leicester City.
