The Rolex Shanghai Masters will take center stage from October 1-12 at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Taylor Fritz enter the tournament as top favorites to leave Shanghai with the title. Carlos Alcaraz is absent from the ATP 1000 tournament after withdrawing on Tuesday (September 30).

Alcaraz defeated Fritz in the final of the Tokyo Open, but in his opening match at the tournament, he twisted his ankle. However, he managed the injury scare throughout the tournament, dropping just one set. He revealed to the Shanghai fans that he was pulling out of the event due to some physical issues.

Alcaraz isn’t the only player to have withdrawn from the event; the likes of Hubert Hurkacz, Arthur Fils, Roberto Bautista Agut, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Alexei Popyrin, and Jacob Fearnley have also followed suit. Joao Fonseca was the most surprising withdrawal in the list as the Brazilian star is more focused on preparing for the European indoor tournaments.

Elsewhere, Djokovic returns to the tour after a month away. The last time the Serbian legend competed on the court was at the US Open in August, where he won five matches before losing to Sinner in the semi-finals. He’s seeking his fifth Shanghai Masters title, having reached the final last year.

He claimed the prestigious title for the first time in 2012 after beating Andy Murray. Meanwhile, Sinner is the defending champion of the tournament. He enters the event just after securing his third title of the season at the China Open, beating Learner Tien in straight sets in Beijing on Wednesday (October 1).

The former World No.1 has struggled in the shadows of Alcaraz for the majority of this season, losing four of his five final meetings against the Spaniard. The only time he defeated the 22-year-old was at the Wimbledon Championships, where he came from a set down to stun Alcaraz at the All England Club.

Fritz is seeking his first hard-court title of the season. He reached the final of the Tokyo Open, losing to Alcaraz. The American star will be hoping to give his best on the court, while Alexander Zverev will also have an eye on the crown. Besides them, Daniil Medvedev will be hoping to also claim the title.
