Just one day is left for the main draw of the US Open to start. On Sunday (August 24), tennis fans can watch several top players, including Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka, in action on the outdoor hardcourts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Women’s final will be held on Saturday (September 6), while the men’s final is scheduled to take place the following day.

Djokovic last lifted a Major here in 2023 by beating 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, and since then, he has made it to just one Major final, at the 2024 Wimbledon, where Carlos Alcaraz denied him his 25th Grand Slam title with a straight-set win. The Spaniard lifted his career’s first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open with a four-set win over Casper Ruud. He lost in the second round last year.

Jannik Sinner, whose first-round match is scheduled to start on Monday, will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year in the final, he beat home favorite Taylor Fritz in straight sets.

Sinner and Alcaraz could only face each other if they progress to the final, as they are the first and second seeds, respectively. If they meet, it will be their fifth encounter this season following their meetings in the finals of the Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the Cincinnati Masters.

Alcaraz holds a 3-1 win-loss record over the Italian ace this season. He lost only the Wimbledon final against the four-time Grand Slam champion. In their last meeting, in the Cincinnati final, Sinner gave him the walkover because he was sick.

Sinner and Alcaraz will also be fighting for the No.1 ranking. The Italian ace will be dethroned by the five-time Grand Slam champion if he fails to defend his title, and also if he doesn’t have a better campaign than the 22-year-old.

Prize money for the 2025 US Open

The total prize pool for this year’s US Open is $90 million. For both women’s and men’s singles events, the total prize money is $31 million. From this, both the women’s and men’s singles champions will receive $5,000,000, while the runners-up will get $2,500,000.

Third round$237,000

Quarterfinals$660,000
Semifinals$1,260,000
Runner-up$2,500,000
Champion$5,000,000

In women’s singles, the first three seeds have won the US Open. Sabalenka will play as the defending champion. She beat home favorite Jessica Pegula last year. World No.2 Iga Swiatek won her career’s third Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open by defeating Ons Jabeur. Last year, however, her run ended in the quarterfinals.

World No.3 Coco Gauff clinched the home Grand Slam title by defeating Sabalenka in 2023. While Sabalenka has reached two Grand Slam finals this season and is yet to win a title since the 2024 US Open, Gauff and Swiatek will be aiming to become double Grand Slam champions this season after their victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, respectively.

In men’s singles, the players to win the most titles are Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, and Jimmy Connors. They have each won five titles at Flushing Meadows.

On the women’s side, Chris Evert and Serena Williams have clinched six US Open singles titles each. All of these players have retired, and it was in New York back in 2022 that Williams hung up her racket.

No player on the men’s side has defended the US Open since Federer. The Swiss Maestro lifted back-to-back titles in New York from 2004 to 2008. The last woman to defend the US Open title was Williams (2012 – 2014). Since Williams, only Naomi Osaka was able to win two titles here (in 2018 and 2020).
