In Short
  • The total prize pool for the 2026 Madrid Open is approximately $9.7 million.
  • Winners of the men's and women's singles will receive $1,188,102, while runners-up will get $631,802.
  • Ranking points awarded include 1000 for the champion and 650 for the runner-up in both events.

The Madrid Open is the first WTA 1000 of the season on clay. But for the men, it will be their second Masters 1000 of the season after the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Aryna Sabalenka will enter the tournament as the defending champion. She defeated Coco Gauff last year to win her third title in the tournament. Prior to the 2025 season, she defeated Ash Barty in 2021 and Iga Swiatek in 2023.

After her defeat to the Belarusian, the six-time Grand Slam champion tasted success the following season by taking her revenge on the World No.1. Sabalenka will be chasing her fourth title of the season in the Spanish capital after wins in Brisbane, Indian Wells, and Miami.

She also reached the final of the Australian Open, but failed to win her third title in the tournament due to Elena Rybakina, who has yet to progress beyond the semifinals in Madrid. It was Rybakina whom Sabalenka defeated in Indian Wells, and it was Gauff whom she defeated in Indian Wells.

The American ace has played three clay-court finals in big events, losing last year’s Italian Open and the Madrid Open, and winning the French Open against Sabalenka. Swiatek, on the other hand, will be chasing her first clay-court title since lifting her fourth Roland Garros trophy in 2024.

On the men’s side, Casper Ruud will play as the defending champion. He defeated Jack Draper last year. World No.1 Jannik Sinner has confirmed that he will be playing in Madrid. Sinner has never advanced past the quarterfinals in the tournament and will be chasing her fourth title of the season.

The four-time Grand Slam champion is on a 22-match winning streak in Masters 1000s, having won the 2025 Paris Masters, the Indian Wells Masters, the Miami Open, and the Monte-Carlo Masters this year. He has become the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double, and he is also the fourth man to win four consecutive Masters 1000 titles after Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, the winner in Madrid in 2022 and 2023, will be skipping the tournament for the second consecutive time due to injury. Alcaraz injured his wrist during the Barcelona Open, which forced him to withdraw from his second match against Tomas Machac.

Because of his withdrawal, Sinner will try to increase his lead over Alcaraz in the rankings, as he doesn’t have any points to defend in the tournament. Sinner dethroned Alcaraz from the top after defeating him in the Monte-Carlo Masters final.

Novak Djokovic also withdrew from the tournament due to an injury. He was last seen in action in the fourth round of the Indian Wells, where Jack Draper knocked him out.
