World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Sunday (January 26) to claim the Australian Open title. The Italian secured his third Grand Slam title and his second in Melbourne. While the win had many highlights, some tennis fans directed their attention toward Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian tennis star has often been a controversial figure in the sport. Over the past 8-9 months, Kyrgios has taken a strong stance against Sinner due to his doping scandal. After Sinner’s Australian Open victory, many fans mocked Kyrgios, asking if he had watched the Italian’s celebration.

Sinner tested positive twice for clostebol in March last year. However, the news was leaked to the press shortly after his Cincinnati title win in August. Since then, Kyrgios has openly criticized Sinner and called for a potential ban.

The relationship between Sinner and Kyrgios has changed dramatically over the past year. After Sinner’s first Grand Slam win last year, Kyrgios sarcastically asked if the Italian would coach him to learn how to win a major. Now, their relationship seems completely broken.

Sinner was asked twice about Kyrgios’ comments. The first time was before the 2024 US Open, when the doping controversy was still fresh in the tennis world. The Italian declined to respond, expressing faith in his team to help him navigate the difficult situation.

The second time occurred shortly before this year’s Australian Open, during a pre-tournament press conference. Once again, Sinner chose not to address Kyrgios’ remarks.

Despite Sinner’s focus on tennis, attention on his doping scandal persists. The final verdict on the case is expected to be announced in Switzerland on April 16th.
