Dominic Thiem, one of the most consistent players on tour in the past couple of years finally claimed his maiden Grandslam title after he defeated Alexander Zverev in the US Open final. Before his maiden slam at US Open, Thiem had suffered three back to back losses in the Grandslam final.
Thiem had lost to Nadal in the 2018 and 2019 French Open finals before losing to Novak Djokovic in a 5 set thriller at the Australian Open 2020.
Dominic Thiem is one of the top players on clay courts and he has proved so by reaching back to back finals at the French Open in 2018 and 2019. This year, Dominic Thiem has confirmed that he will not participate in any tournament in preparation for the French Open 2020 and will directly start his clay-court season at the French Open.
In an interview with Bild am Sonntag, Thiem said that Nadal and Djokovic are still the top contenders at the French Open 2020. Thiem said, “Nadal and Djokovic are the absolute favourites in Paris, He (Nadal) did not travel to New York and has trained on clay during this time. And he’s the best player of all time on clay.”
Thiem also spoke about his prize money earnings and if it will have any effect on his choice of residence. With his US Open win, Thiem added $3 million to his career prize money taking the total to $27 million. While many sports athletes have shifted their residence to tax havens like Monaco, Dominic Thiem does not have any plan in doing so. Thiem said in the interview with Bild am Sonntag, “I don’t like the thought that I would have to go to Monaco after a long series of tournaments. Simply because I don’t like it there. You have to say that the tax rate for top athletes in this country (Austria) is fair.”
Not heard from Thomas Muster after US Open win: Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem also revealed that he had not heard from his former coach, Thomas Muster after his US Open victory. However, Dominic Thiem was not surprised stating that Thomas Muster was not the type of person who communicates through the phone.
Thiem said, “No, he hasn’t yet. But he’s not that kind of cellphone (person) either. It was an interesting collaboration with Thomas, but we’re two different characters. It just didn’t fit, but it was worth a try. It was logical to give it a try, because up to now he was the only Austrian who knew the feeling of winning a Grand Slam tournament.”
Thomas Muster, former French Open champion had joined Thiem’s camp in January but they parted ways just after a few weeks.
