Since 2024, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have dominated the season a great deal, so much so that they have won a combined 26 titles from 35 finals, including the last eight Majors. Last year, Sinner finished the season with the most titles – eight from nine finals, including the Australian Open and the US Open. He also ended the season as the World No.1.
This year, it was Alcaraz who won the most, eight titles from 11 finals. He also ended the season at the top of the rankings table.
Alcaraz himself has said that he suffers from lapses of concentration and that Sinner’s presence helps him maintain his level. Rafael Nadal, in an interview with AS, said he doesn’t identify with either Sinner or Alcaraz, calling the Italian a more focused player and the latter a more unpredictable one.
I don’t identify with either of them. They’re different players than I used to be. I think Carlos is more unpredictable: he makes more mistakes, plays more spectacular points, and sometimes doesn’t have such a defined playing style, which makes him unpredictable and fun for the spectator. Jannik is a more methodical, focused player, with a more defined playing style, and he adds things little by little, which is why he’s so solid and loses so few matches.
Rafael Nadal said
Sinner himself wanted to become an unpredictable player. Following his US Open defeat to the six-time Grand Slam champion, Sinner said he wanted to add more variety to his game. Since that admission, the four-time Grand Slam champion lifted the China Open, Vienna Open, Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals. In the championship clash, he went past Alcaraz in straight sets, which helped him improve his head-to-head record to 6-10.
Sometimes it seems like Carlos is more scattered, but when you look at the results… he’s had an incredibly consistent and solid year in all the major tournaments. That’s why it makes me laugh when I hear that he’s scattered: the results say otherwise, that’s my point of view.
Rafael Nadal added
Nadal called time on his career at the 2024 Davis Cup after Spain’s 2-0 defeat to eventual runners-up Netherlands. He met both Sinner and Alcaraz before retiring. The World No.1 held a 1-2 record in the head-to-head matchups, but Sinner failed to defeat the 22-time Grand Slam champion in their last three meetings.
Juan Carlos Ferrero thinks Carlos Alcaraz is capable of putting the coaching situation behind him
Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero have split. It came as a surprise to the entire tennis world, as perhaps no one foresaw this happening this year after Alcaraz’s career’s most successful season.

The only Major where Ferrero couldn’t guide Alcaraz to victory was the Australian Open. The 22-year-old, in fact, has never reached the semifinal in Melbourne, reaching the last eight twice, in 2023 and 2024, losing both to Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, respectively, in four sets. Ferrero believes Alcaraz can overcome the coaching situation and focus on his Australian Open campaign.
That’s possible. Obviously, changes like this are always complicated because they’re unexpected. From a tennis perspective, I think Carlos is capable of overcoming this and going to Australia in top form, trying to put this situation behind him.
Juan Carlos Ferrero told Marca
The 45-year-old guided the youngster to 24 tour-level titles, including his six Majors. Alcaraz also became the No.1 player under him. Coach Samuel Lopez, who joined Alcaraz’s team in December last year, will continue to coach the player. At the Australian Open, Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam.
