The ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal rises from No. 3 back up to No. 2 on Monday’s ATP rankings after winning his first title of the year—and the 87th of his career—in Barcelona. It’s his 12th career title at the historic tournament, having previously won it in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Earlier in March, Daniil Medvedev rose from No. 3 to No. 2, ending one of the most incredible records in ATP rankings history—no one outside of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had been ranked in the Top 2 since July 2005, almost 16 years earlier. But the feat was to last just for six weeks.

Rafa Nadal secured his 12th title in Barcelona, after he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in a three-set epic in the finals. The Spaniard ended the Greek’s nine match winning streak on clay courts, and lifted the first title of the season.
