Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are the undisputed kings of men’s tennis at the moment. The duo have dominated the tour in the past year and a half, winning a combined seven Grand Slam titles.
Rafael Nadal, who has played the duo on the ATP Tour, has broken down the matchups of both the players. The former player claims that Sinner is extremely lethal on transitions and can pick the ball earlier than most. Nadal said on New York Times:
He puts a rhythm on the forehand that is very difficult to follow. He’s very quick on picking the ball early and he’s quick on the transition from defending to attacking.
On the other hand, he believes that his compatriot has the unpredictable factor and can exceed the level of Sinner. However, Nadal also believes that Alcaraz has more errors in his game.
Carlos is more magic, he’s more unpredictable, he can play at a level that probably sometimes Jannik cannot. But at the same time, he’s making more mistakes, too — he can play better, but he can play worse, and it’s about finding the balance…From my point of view, Carlos can improve a little bit the tactical way to approach some matches. Sometimes it feels like he always plays for every big shot, and sometimes, he doesn’t need that much.
Sinner and Alcaraz are very likely to finish the season as the top two ranked players in the world following their dominance in the 2025 season. The duo have won three Grand Slams and three Masters 1000 combined so far this season.
Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz: The status of World No.1 ranking
World No.1 Jannik Sinner and World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz are tipped to meet in the US Open final for a third Grand Slam in a row, with the No. 1 ranking also on the line. To get there, Sinner must first face world No. 27 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals, while Alcaraz will take on seventh seed Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Sinner has held the world No. 1 spot for 65 straight weeks since June 2024, when he overtook Djokovic after winning the French Open. Alcaraz, on the other hand, made history at the 2022 US Open by becoming the youngest ATP No. 1 at just 19 years old. He has already enjoyed 36 weeks at the top, though his last reign ended in September 2023.
Heading into this year’s event, both players had momentum. Alcaraz won the Cincinnati Masters just before the US Open, after Sinner was forced to retire from their final due to illness. That victory gave the Spaniard a strong boost ahead of Flushing Meadows.
In the live rankings, Sinner began the US Open with 11,480 points, while Alcaraz sat second on 9,590. The 1,890-point gap was significant, but results in New York have opened the door for a possible shift. Depending on how deep each man goes, the top spot could change hands once again.
Prize money earned by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in their US Open showdown
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are set for a huge US Open semi-final showdown on Friday. Both men are former champions in New York and are chasing another chance to play for the title. Their meeting will be the first since Djokovic defeated Alcaraz earlier this year at the Australian Open. With experience on one side and youth on the other, the clash promises to be a highlight of the tournament.

Djokovic, now 38, has battled through injuries but still reached a record 14th US Open semi-final. Along the way, he has beaten several younger opponents to prove he remains a force at the top level. Alcaraz, meanwhile, has reached the last four in dominant fashion without dropping a set. Both players know what is on the line when they step onto Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In terms of rankings, both men have already gained a significant boost. Djokovic, who only earned 100 points last year, has secured 800 points by making the semi-finals, lifting him to 4,830 in the ATP Live Rankings and back up to No. 4 in the world. Alcaraz has also improved his tally after a second-round loss last year left him with just 50 points. He now holds 10,340 points and is provisionally back as world No. 1 ahead of Jannik Sinner.
The winner of Friday’s clash will take home 1,300 ranking points. If Alcaraz wins, he will remain on top unless Sinner manages to beat him in the final. A Djokovic victory would keep him at world No. 4 but a title run would lift him to No. 3. With both rankings and pride at stake, the match carries major significance for the rest of the season.
