The bronze statue of Chicago Bulls and NBA great Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan, being the legend that he is, has already seen a lot of his prized possessions and memorabilia being sold for ridiculous amounts of money. The Chicago Bulls great has, on his own, driven up the price of sporting merchandise ever since he took the basketball world by storm.

Now, every sporting franchise sees merchandise sales as a major part of their operating revenue. With fans clamoring to buy out of support for their team or player, some noteworthy merchandises do end up becoming valuable assets. The Bulls legend has already been part of some of the most expensive auctions ever.

But this time, it was not something he used or wore during games. Neither was it official trading cards or signed posters or gameday brochures. It happened when one gentleman named Louis entered the reality television show Pawn Stars with one such item.

The item in question was a bronze statue of the six-time NBA champion. The details on the bust were highly accurate. But as it was not an official piece, the owner knew he would not get much.

I’m hoping to get $10,000 for my Michael Jordan statue.

Louis said during the introduction on Pawn Stars

Host Austin ‘Chumlee’ Russell then called in an art expert to assess the statue’s value. The expert identified the artist and valued the piece at a lower $6,000. However, Russell offered $3,000, prompting Louis to take back the statue and walk away, knowing it was one of only ten pieces ever made.

Michael Jordan memorabilia usually sell for a lot higher than $6,000

The owner realized that trying to sell the piece on Pawn Stars was a mistake. Instead, he should approach auction houses, where—despite commissions—he would have a better chance of selling it at or above his asking price. This approach often proves successful for Michael Jordan merchandise.

For instance, tickets to Jordan’s NBA debut have sold in six figures, with one unused ticket fetching $468,000 in 2022. Signed trading cards and jersey pieces also tend to start in the six-figure range. Even Jordan himself is aware of the high demand for his memorabilia.

When rare items surface, especially those unknown to him or his representatives, they quickly catch his attention. Anything the superstar has touched holds significant value in the auction world.

One of the most valuable pieces, his rookie season game-worn Air Jordans, reached seven figures. With prices like these, it was understandable that Louis hesitated to part with a Jordan statue for such a low offer, even though it was an unofficial collector’s item.
