Just one day after the Dallas PD issued an arrest warrant for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice over his involvement “in regard to a serious bodily injury crash” that took place on the 30th of March, he has turned himself in. Rice is doing everything to signal that he will be cooperating with the law enforcement authorities until the matter reaches a conclusive end.
Rashee Rice took full responsibility for the crash, which resulted in the injury of four people in Dallas, Texas. As per BBC, he faces eight felony charges and risks facing imprisonment for years. He has been arrested since turning himself in.
The incident which took place involved a Lamborghini driven by the Chiefs’ wide receiver and a Corvette causing a ‘chain reaction collision’ which led to four other vehicles crashing and being damaged.
The person driving the Corvette has been identified as Theodore Knox, aged 21. There has been an arrest warrant issued against him and he faces the same counts as Rice. The passengers in the car will not be charged. Both Knox and Rice had left the scene immediately after the crash.
Rashee Rice risks facing arrest for years upon conviction
The second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft posted bond following his arrest. The bond value was $40,000. Rice faces six counts of collision involving bodily injury, each conviction carries a sentence of up to five years and fines of up to $5,000.
The wide receiver’s career hangs in the balance as he faces charges of collision involving serious bodily injury, an offence punishable up to 10 years in prison and a charge of aggravated assault which is punishable up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Rice issued a statement apologizing to those involved in the accident. It is unfortunate to consider the possibility of him never stepping on an NFL field again.
Rice had 79 receptions for 938 yards and 7 touchdowns in his rookie season. He was a key part of the Kansas City Chiefs offense and in a year where Patrick Mahomes struggled to find targets to throw to on the field, Rice stepped up when the team needed him.
His incident in many ways brings back memories of Henry Ruggs III, who has been sentenced for up to 10 years in prison for driving drunk and being involved in an accident that claimed the life of a woman.
While Rice has not caused the death of persons involved, he still faces serious charges. The NFL has been keeping close tabs on the developments surrounding the incident. The league will wait for the legal proceedings to conclude before deciding if the wide receiver must be punished.
