In a behind-the-scenes video released by the BCCI, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen lauding Ravindra Jadeja in the dressing room, after the third Test at Lord’s. Gambhir praised the all-rounder for his outstanding batting display, despite the team’s collapse.
Ravindra Jadeja has certainly been a talking point following the second and third Tests against England. The 36-year-old all-rounder, despite facing calls for his removal from India’s red-ball squad due to his age, has firmly justified his inclusion. While Jadeja has struggled with the ball, he has undeniably showcased his experience by accumulating an impressive 327 runs across three matches, at an average of 109.
Out of the six innings in which he has batted against England, Jadeja has notched up 50+ scores in four of them, with the highest being a 89-run knock in the first innings at Edgbaston, a match which India went on to win by a record margin of 336 runs. Jadeja was equally impressive in the third Test at the Lord’s, scoring 72 off 131 balls in the first innings to guide the Men in Blue to match England’s 387-run score.
While India ultimately failed to chase a modest 193-run target in the second innings, Ravindra Jadeja still tried to lead the fightback in that final innings. The 36-year-old scored 61 runs off 181 balls, batting through almost the entirety of the final day at Lord’s. He held firm at one end while the rest of the Indian batting order collapsed around him, bringing India agonizingly close to a memorable victory in the final innings.
The dream ended in despair when Mohammed Siraj lost his wicket in the 75th over, after a well-defended ball from him rolled back onto the stumps. As England narrowly triumphed by 22 runs, Jadeja’s heroic knock earned widespread applause. In a video shared by the BCCI later on, titled ‘The MVP ft. Ravindra Jadeja’, it featured a moment from the dressing room, after the defeat at Lord’s.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir, in an morale boosting speech, lead his players in expressing his admiration for Jadeja’s determination, and acknowledged his ‘incredible fight’ until the end. Not only Gambhir, but batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate also praised the all-rounder’s temperament and his growth as a batter. Siraj, who batted alongside Jadeja for 13 overs at the tail end, emphasized his importance and value to the team.
That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu [Ravindra Jadeja], that was absolutely brilliant.
Nonetheless, India will now be keenly hoping to stage a strong comeback and level the series when they face England in the fourth Test match at Old Trafford in Manchester. This upcoming fixture is a must-win game for the Men in Blue if they are to keep their hopes alive.
