In Short
  • Mario Chalmers expressed disappointment that the final play in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals was designed for LeBron James instead of Ray Allen.
  • Chalmers believes Ray Allen's clutch three-pointer was pivotal in the Heat's victory and James' second championship.
  • Skip Bayless supported Chalmers' view, criticizing James' performance in clutch situations compared to other legends.

Mario Chalmers and LeBron James played four years together during their time with the Miami Heat. The shot made by Ray Allen in Game 6 to tie the game at the end of regulation time will go down as one of the greatest ‘clutch shot’ in NBA history.

In the dying seconds of the fourth quarter, the San Antonio Spurs led 95-92. James was entrusted with the final shot, but missed his shot from beyond the arc. Chris Bosh got the offensive rebound and passed it to Allen.

Allen stepped backwards and made the three-pointer and tied the game. The shot sent the whole American Airlines Arena into a frenzy. James later took over the game in overtime and forced a Game 7 at home and the rest is history.

However, Chalmers revealed that he was upset that the final play to tie the game was drawn for James and not for Allen.

I’m not gonna lie. I was upset when Spo drew this up because I felt like we should be running it for Ray instead of Bron, but superstars are superstars and you give them a chance to be superstars in those moments so he got a good look and just missed it.

Mario Chalmers in an interview with Bleacher Report

Many critics have often disputed that LeBron James is not a clutch player. It looks like Mario Chalmers believed so as well. Chalmers has made controversial comments regarding James in the past. He even went on to claim once that opponents do not fear the four-time champion.

There was a lot of pressure for James to deliver during his time in the Heat. After losing the 2011 NBA Finals to the Dallas Mavericks, James came under heavy scrutiny. He made it to the NBA Finals in all his four years in Miami and went on to win two championships during that run.

The three-pointer made by Ray Allen changed history as the Heat went on to win Game 7. It gave James his second NBA championship. However, the Spurs avenged their loss in the very next year in the 2014 NBA Finals as they amassed a gentlemen sweep over the Heat.

Skip Bayless echoes Mario Chalmers’ statements on LeBron James taking the last shot

Sports columnist Skip Bayless has built his career around LeBron James since the 2000s. He is known for his constant criticism of James ever since he stepped into the NBA in 2003. He continues to be critical of the 41-year-old till date.

Following Mario Chalmers’ statements, Bayless took to social media to give his opinion.

Mario Chalmers says he was upset with Spo for calling that final play in 2013’s Game 6 for LeBron, not Ray. Of course, LBJ LeBricked that tying 3. Mario also says thank you to Pop for having taken out Tim Duncan. Bosh, offensive rebound. Kick to Ray, Greatest Clutch Shot Ever.

Skip Bayless on X

Bayless has always called out James for not being a clutch shooter like Michael Jordan. While James does have the most game-winning buzzer beaters in the playoffs, Bayless calls him a “lousy” free throw and three-point shooter.

Mario Chalmers speaks on his role in the 2013 Miami Heat roster

Mario Chalmers was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 34th pick in the 2008 NBA draft. However, Chalmers was immediately included in a trade and signed with the Heat. He played in the franchise for seven years before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The 2013 Heat squad was one of the greatest squads ever assembled in the NBA. They had the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and added Ray Allen in the offseason.

During the interview, Chalmers spoke about his role in the 2013 Heat squad.

My role with this 2013 team was to play defense, knock down shots, and try to control the egos that come with being hall of famers with the players I had on my team.

Chalmers won two championships alongside the ‘Big 3’ during his stint in Miami. He played an instrumental role in both championship runs. After his move to the Grizzlies, he went on to play for two more seasons before making his move overseas.
