Stephanie Vaquer is one of the best women’s wrestlers on the planet right now. Thus, it was a huge deal when she signed with WWE, especially just a few weeks after wrestling shows for AEW. However, many fans were bewildered when she was sent down to NXT rather than the main roster. The real reason for this decision has finally been revealed.

Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Vaquer revealed that she was given the choice of going to NXT or the main roster. The 31-year-old chose the latter option. However, she later realized that she first wanted to learn English, how to perform at a weekly TV show, and learn the American style of wrestling, especially what was followed in WWE. Thus, she went back on her choice, choosing to join the developmental brand.

She spent the first few weeks of her time with WWE wrestling at live events. During this period, she amazed fans with her moveset before becoming a mainstay on NXT. Vaquer went on to win the NXT Women’s North American Championship soon after that. She now looks to enter a title vs. title match against Giulia.

So, I say okay, I need to learn English, I need to learn TV show, I need to learn American style, WWE style. So I say, first I say main roster. That changed and say, ‘I want to go to NXT for learn’.

New signees in WWE are mostly sent to NXT first unless they have already competed for the Stamford-based promotion in the past. Jordynne Grace will also be spending some time in NXT despite being a highly talented superstar and even familiar with the American style of wrestling.

Furthermore, Ricky Saints made his debut recently on the developmental brand only. It is unclear whether they were given the same choice as Vaquer. Regardless, NXT seems to be their home for now.

Stephanie Vaquer reveals why she signed with WWE over AEW

Stephanie Vaquer faced Mercedes Mone in a title vs. title match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024, where both the AEW TBS Championship and NJPW Strong Women’s Championship were on the line. While the erstwhile Sasha Banks came out on top after this match, most assumed that the Chilean was AEW-bound soon.

However, she shocked the world by suddenly signing with WWE. The Jacksonville-based promotion even implemented heavy sanctions to prevent this from happening again. During the same interview on Busted Open After Dark, Stephanie Vaquer revealed that she had many options when considering whom to sign with. She was in talks with multiple wrestling promotions. However, WWE had always been her dream. Thus, she went ahead with the Stamford-based promotion.

My dream. WWE is my dream, and so I say, ‘Okay, I try to think like adult, that option,’ but WWE is my dream. And say, ‘Okay, this is for me, many option and talk, talk, speak,’ but I say no, WWE is for me.

Vaquer is currently enjoying her first WWE championship reign as the NXT Women’s North American Champion. She recently had her first televised title defense against Karmen Petrovic. Furthermore, she was even seen in the Women’s Royal Rumble match in January. There is no doubt that she will be a main-event player for WWE over the next several years.
