What is the reason behind Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic celebration?
Cristiano Ronaldo has performed a variety of celebrations during his career, but one in specific has come to symbolize his prowess. Ronaldo is among the top goal scorers of football history and has had plenty of opportunities to polish his celebrations. He’s decided on a few routines and the most renowned of which is his “siii”.
The Portugal striker scores a goal and executes a mid-air spin as he sprints towards the corner flag. He then leaps into the air, rotating 180 degrees while doing so, facing the crowd.
He takes a dominant posture, spreads out his arms, and yells “siiii” which is Spanish for “Yes”. Supporters often join in with him by screaming the word “siiii,” which reverberates throughout the stadium. His signature celebration has been a big part of his career thus far, and it initially appeared when he was playing for Real Madrid.
His celebration has been depicted by several other players and also in various video games. Recently, Jesse Lingard was seen performing Ronaldo’s iconic celebration after scoring for England in the World Cup Qualifiers.
Cristiano Ronaldo reveals the reason behind “siii” celebration
“I started to say ‘si’, it’s like ‘yes’, when I was in Real Madrid. When we would win, everyone would say ‘siiiii’ and so I started to say it. I don’t know why, it was natural,” said Ronaldo.
“I was in the USA and we played against Chelsea [in 2013] and I don’t know where this is coming from, the celebration. I just scored the goal and it just came out. It was just natural, to be honest. Since that, I started to do it more often and I feel like the supporters and the fans see it and they’re like ‘Cristiano, siiiiiiuuuu’.
“I’m like ‘wow! People are reminded of me because of it. So it’s good, and I’ll continue doing it like that,” added Ronaldo.
Ronaldo has now returned to his former club Manchester United and is expected to make his second debut at the Old Trafford against Newcastle United. Fans would be eager to see Portugal forward perform his iconic celebration in the United jersey.
