5 reasons why Dak Prescott wouldn’t be able to end Cowboys’ Super Bowl drought in 2024

Jerry Jones has faith in veteran quarterback Dak Prescott who will play the final year of his contract, to deliver a Super Bowl but all signs point otherwise.

It’s Super Bowl or bust for Dak Prescott. The 30-year-old who will play the final year of his contract must lift the Lombardi Trophy or at the very least have to reach one to convince owner Jerry Jones that he is still the man for the Dallas Cowboys quarterback job.

When asked about whether the Cowboys are interested in extending Prescott’s contract, Jones always sounds like a broken record. Not once has he said that they don’t have belief in their quarterback, instead they are convinced he is the right man for the team.

However, Prescott’s stats tell a different story. He is a great regular-season quarterback and there is no two ways about it. A CBS Sports comparison of 50 games between three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes and Prescott painted an interesting picture.

The graphic showed both Mahomes and Prescott had 105 passing touchdowns and surprisingly one less interception (38 to Mahomes’ 39) along with a better passer rating (101.3% compared to Mahomes’ 98.9%) and better yards per completion.

Blogging the Boys, writer Brandon Loree, compiled an extensive CV of Prescott’s regular season numbers. According to Loree, the Cowboys’ No. 1 leads the QBs with a 67% completion rate during the regular season.

This is perhaps the reason Jones wants to stick with Prescott and let him play out his contract. However, the 81-year-old mustn’t forget the horrible playoff record of his favorite Cowboy.

Dak Prescott only has 2 playoff wins in 7 games in the postseason, which includes a loss against the Green Bay Packers in January 2024. For quarterbacks with at least 160 pass attempts in the playoffs, 47 quarterbacks have better records compared to Dak. The list includes the likes of Drew Bledsoe, Matt Hasselbeck, Kerry Collins, and a few others.

Why Dak Prescott will not win a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys?

First of all, the organization is a mess. The false offseason promises of Jerry Jones combined with a marginally successful draft point to a mishap waiting to happen. Jones’ belief in the youth prompted him to cut down the overall age of the squad compared to last season.

5. Below-par offensive support for Prescott

Key areas like the receiver and the running back spots don’t have quality depth. Besides CeeDee Lamb, who also is in the last year of his rookie contract, the Cowboys have veteran Brandin Cooks and unproven youngster KaVontae Turpin. In contrast, the Miami Dolphins have Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and recently added Super Bowl winner Odell Beckham Jr.

Dallas fans were outraged when the Cowboys failed to secure free agent Derrick Henry in the offseason. The former Titans rusher was ready to play for Dallas, but Jones did not want to pay him more than what he had offered. Eventually, they re-signed former player Ezekiel Elliott for one year.

If Dak doesn't get a 100-yard run support he's got a losing record. Dak [Prescott] has feasted on losing teams in the NFL, and with Philadelphia signing AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith, acquiring Saquan Barkley, and upgrading coordinators, you better be ready, and you better have ammo... And Dallas signed Zeke [Ezekiel Elliott], who is washed --- we saw it in New England.
FOX’s Colin Cowherd said in an episode of The Herd

If Prescott isn’t provided with adequate quality players, then it’s basically setting him up for failure.

4. Jerry Jones is high on collateral damage

Jerry Jones himself has created enough problems for the ‘America’s Team’ that has stopped them from going further in the playoffs for more than 25 years. Most Cowboys fans want Jones to be the owner and not the one who meddles with every nook and cranny of the team.

Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson, in an episode of his Nightcap podcast with Shannon Sharpe, highlighted the same that Jones is killing the organization from within.

Jerry Jones won't see this… Let the boys handle the business from now [on], we don't need you to talk about anything. ‘This is the best team since 1995,’ [don't do any of that]. Let them boys go out there and play ball, don't put no more added pressure than what already comes with the star.
Chad Johnson said

3. Head coach hanging by the thread

Similar to Prescott, head coach Mike McCarthy is on borrowed time in Arlington. Even though he led the Cowboys to consecutive 12-5 finishes, the underwhelming post-season stats threw him into the dragon’s den.

After the wild card exit in January, fans wanted Jones to sack McCarthy and appoint newly jobless Bill Belichick. However, Jones decided to stick with McCarthy and recent news revealed that the 61-year-old is fed with the owner’s shenanigans.

Word from inside the Cowboys locker room is that players hoped the head coach would get at least two more years for a rebuild but one year is what he will have to work with. This has put a lot of Cowboys players into a dilemma. This puts added pressure on Dak Prescott to deliver on top of a bad history of playoff losses.

2. Even history is not in favor of the Cowboys QB

There’s one historical fact that could come back to haunt Dak Prescott in his pursuit of a Super Bowl. No quarterback ever has won a Super Bowl with their drafted team after failing to start in a Conference Championship within the first 8 years of their career.

There are a few who won Super Bowls but with other teams, like Matthew Stafford (drafted by the Detroit Lions and won with the Los Angeles Rams), Jim Plunkett (drafted by the New England Patriots and won with the Oakland Raiders), and Steve Young (drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won with the San Francisco 49ers).

Well, records are meant to be broken. Just last year, Brock Purdy became the first Mr. Irrelevant quarterback to play in a Super Bowl.

1. Lack of faith by the Cowboys in extending the contract

Prescott even though said in an interview that he doesn’t play for the money. However, this may become the reason for never winning a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. The Dallas franchise can trade him or tag him and he has a salary cap hit of more than $55 million.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter claimed this is all the leverage Prescott needs to secure a mammoth deal. It depends on what Jones wants to do after the 2024 season. He can either reset the quarterback market or Prescott will become a free agent, ending his chances of a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.
