Former World No. 1 doubles player and Serena Williams‘ former coach Rennae Stubbs has claimed that Novak Djokovic would be pleased to join the list of Olympic singles gold medal winners, primarily because Roger Federer is not on that list.

The Serbian star completed his trophy collection by winning the Olympic singles gold medal earlier in August, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the gold medal match. It was his 99th career title and his first of the season.

He joins an exclusive club of gold medal champions in singles because Rafa [Nadal] won in singles and doubles, Steffi [Graf] of course did what we will probably never see [again] — winning all four Grand Slams and then winning a gold medal.
Rennae Stubbs said on Racquet’s Tennis Podcast

On the other hand, Federer has won an Olympic gold as well, but it was in doubles with his Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka. In the singles format, the Swiss Maestro has only managed to collect a silver medal, losing to Andy Murray in the final match of the 2012 London Olympics.

But Novak joins Andre Agassi, the likes of these players. Roger Federer is not even on that list. Although Roger won a gold medal in doubles, he never did this in singles so that’s something that I am sure Novak is really happy that he has got over Roger.
Rennae Stubbs added

Both Federer and Djokovic have two Olympic medals to their names. In addition to his first Olympic gold medal this year, Djokovic won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, defeating James Blake to secure third place.

Ranking Novak Djokovic’s chances at the US Open

However, Djokovic enters this year’s tournament without winning any of the first three Grand Slams. The former World No. 1 hasn’t played any tennis since winning the Olympic gold medal for his country earlier this month. As a result, Djokovic’s form at Flushing Meadows is uncertain. The good news for him is that his main contenders, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, haven’t been playing well either.

Sinner failed to defend his title at the National Bank Open last week, losing to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz was knocked out in Cincinnati’s opening round by Gael Monfils. Therefore, tennis fans can expect an open field at the final Grand Slam of the year.
