Luchadors are famous for their bright and colorful outfits that they wear to the ring. Rey Mysterio often takes this to the next level. Not only does he switch up his ring gear quite often, but he has also taken inspiration from popular mainstream characters. However, it turns out that this habit was going to end him up in trouble.
Speaking on Unlikely with Adrian Hernandez, Mysterio revealed that WWE shut down his superhero-inspired gear. The Hall of Famer thought that this was quite odd, considering that he was only using his own logo on his outfits. He was only using their colors. He also revealed the origin of his superhero costumes came from his time in Mexico, where he donned a Superman-style cape and tights for his matches in AAA.
After this Superman-inspired gear, Rey Mysterio eventually shifted to other characters like Batman. He continued experimenting with newer outfits and characters until WWE finally shut him down. The company was allegedly getting cease-and-desist letters from the owners of these characters.
I just carried that with me to WWE until they told me, ‘Hey, maybe you gotta stop a little bit because we’re getting cease and desist letters from them.’

Mysterio has dressed up as various Marvel and DC characters over the years, especially during PLEs. The Raw superstar has been seen sporting ring gear inspired by The Flash, Magneto, Wolverine, The Joker, etc. In fact, this trend dates back decades. The 50-year-old once even sported a Spider-Man outfit when he used to wrestle for WCW.
Rey Mysterio talks about kicking off the Royal Rumble with Penta
The 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble match kicked off with Rey Mysterio and Penta entering as numbers one and two, respectively. They put on an impressive showing of the Luchador style before other competitors made their way to the ring. During the same interview, the Ultimate Underdog mentioned how opening that match was an extremely special moment not just for them but also for Lucha Libre and the people that they represent.

Mysterio also mentioned how special it was to see two Mexicans kick off one of the biggest matches of the year. Furthermore, they were soon joined by Andrade and Santos Escobar. Penta emerged as the iron man of that match, surviving over 42 minutes before being eliminated by Finn Balor. Finally, the 30-man match was won by Jey Uso.
It was intense. It was a really special moment, not only for us, but for Lucha Libre itself, for our people that we represent. The fact that after 40-plus years, the first Royal Rumble kicks off with two Mexicans, I get chills just thinking about it. It was a very, very special moment.

Penta himself has also stated that Mysterio is a huge role model for him. However, he does not want to be the next version of the 50-year-old. Rather, he believes that he still has his own unique identity and wants to carve his own identity for the world to see.
