Despite the success he has brought to the San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy has faced intense scrutiny from critics, who attributed the team’s performance to the star-studded offense rather than the quarterback’s abilities leading the offense. But this Sunday, when he stepped on the football field without most of the stars of the O-line, he stunned everyone with his performance.
After dominating till the Super Bowl last season, the 49ers were riding high on confidence to be unbeatable this season.
Over the previous three games, they have won just one bringing themselves under scrutiny from fans as well as critics. However, this week’s impressive performance hardly missed any eye.
Even though the 49ers couldn’t succeed in a victory, the third-year quarterback shut down his critics by completing the game with 22 out of his 30 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, along with 10 rushing attempts for 41 yards– that too without star offensive players to his support such as George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Christian McCaffrey.
Richard Sherman lauds Brock Purdy’s performance, counting him among top five
Seeing his remarkable performance, former NFL cornerback-turned-analyst Richard Sherman applauded the 49ers’ young signal-caller in the latest edition of his podcast, ‘The Richard Sherman Podcast.’ He claimed that Purdy made a loud statement with his astounding individual stats during the Sunday Night Football Game against the Los Angeles Rams.
I thought this was a statement game for Brock Purdy. Because they say: 'He can't do it without his weapons… He threw for almost 300 [yards], three touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran the ball 41 yards. He's a good quarterback, he's an elite quarterback. I say he's one of the top-five quarterbacks in the [NFL].Richard Sherman said
He argued that Purdy is never credited enough for his contributions to the 49ers’ success in the last couple of years– when he took over the starting role.
If you talk about this [top QB list] list and you don't mention Brock Purdy, then you're a hater. You're just a guy who doesn't like low-round picks overachieving and playing above what you expect them to do and you want to go with the way things are projected.Richard Sherman added
He called out his critics for judging based on his last round 2022 NFL Draft when he is playing at an elite level in the NFL at present. Purdy has proven to be a game-changer for the Niners, and his team and head coach Kyle Shanahan are well aware of that.
