IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant appointed as Delhi Capitals’ captain; Shreyas Iyer ruled out of tournament

Rishabh Pant

Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed Rishabh Pant as their skipper for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the injury to regular skipper Shreyas Iyer during the recently concluded series between India and England. Pant was the vice-captain last year for the franchise but captaincy is bound to be a new cup of tea for him and it would be exciting to watch the youngster lead the franchise.

There were various other candidates in the fray for the captaincy such as Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith. But it seems like their uncertainty in featuring in the playing XI has prevented their appointment. Similarly, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shikhar Dhawan were also contenders. However, the role has now gone to Rishabh Pant and if the southpaw takes to captaincy the way he has to cricket in 2021, DC could be in for a terrific season

Delhi Capitals took to Twitter today to make the announcement of the appointment of Rishabh Pant. They wrote, “Rishabh Pant will be our Captain for #IPL2021. @ShreyasIyer15 has been ruled out of the upcoming season following his injury in the #INDvENG series and @RishabhPant17 will lead the team in his absence.”

The announcement also confirms that Shreyas Iyer is out of the tournament which means that the 26-year-old’s participation in the Royal London One-Day Cup where he signed for Lancashire recently is in doubt.

For Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant’s appointment seems like a move in the right direction as they have always stressed on backing youngsters. This was exactly how Iyer was backed and it turned out successfully. Pant, DC and the coaching staff would thus, be raring to get started.

DC open their IPL campaign against the Chennai Super Kings on the 10th of April in Mumbai.
