In what is truly shocking and sad news, wrestler Ritika Phogat reportedly committed suicide early in the morning today after she supposedly lost the final of a wrestling tournament that was held in Bharatpur. Ritika was just 17 years of age and had a promising career ahead of her until it all has been rudely cut out. A part of the Phogat wrestling family and the cousin of Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, Ritika was competing at the state level sub-junior and junior wrestling levels.

The Phogat family is among the most well-known wrestling families in India and in the world and it has now suffered a huge loss. The family and especially Geeta and Babita’s lives were chronicled in the famous movie, Dangal. Apart from the two and Ritika, a huge chunk of members in the family have been competing in wrestling. Cousin Vinesh Phogat has been winning laurels for the country while Ritu Phogat has been competing in MMA.

In the tournament which was held in Bharatpur, Ritika had made her way to the final with ease. However, in the summit clash, the match turned out to be a thrilling one and she lost by reportedly the ‘narrowest of margins’. Suffering from shock due to the loss, Ritika took the decision of hanging herself to death. Further, Mahavir Phogat, the father of Geeta and Babita is also reported to have been present at the venue.

Soon after the news has emerged, sportspersons and the wrestling fraternity have taken to social media to express their condolences to the Phogat family. Mental health in sports and any walk of life is extremely important more than anything else. Events like Ritika’s unfortunate death come across as a rude shock and such incidents have to be prevented at all costs.
