Robert Griffin III fails to understand why Brock Purdy isn’t on the ‘Top 10 quarterback’ list despite reaching the last Super Bowl

ESPN compiled a Top 10 NFL quarterback list, leaving out Brock Purdy which according to Robert Griffin III was a shocker considering how much the third year quarterback has achieved since he entered the league.

No matter how much Brock Purdy delivers results for the San Francisco 49ers, it still will not be enough for him to be counted as a Top 10 NFL quarterback. Time and again, analysts have sold Purdy short, labeling him as a ‘system quarterback.’

A recent ESPN list of the top 10 quarterbacks did not include Brock Purdy, even though he won the NFC Championship game and played in the Super Bowl last season. Robert Griffin III, a long-time backer of the 24-year-old, pinched himself with the injustice done to the third-year shot caller.

Griffin did not waste any time and voiced his anguish on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the analysts’ methods of selecting quarterbacks. He highlighted several of Purdy’s statistics in which he led the league en route to the Super Bowl in Vegas.

RG3 called out the analysts, claiming the list that they complied with was ‘absurd’ without Purdy. He was first in passer rating, 2nd in pass completion, 3rd in passing touchdowns, and 5th in passing yards. However, the most important number proving Purdy is an elite quarterback is his win-to-lose ratio, which is 24 to 7. Furthermore, he has four playoff wins in two years—more than Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts.

Purdy did, however, receive an honorable mention from the analysts. If he wants to be in the elite conversation, then he must secure the Super Bowl.

The time to extend Brock Purdy’s contract is fast approaching

Currently, the biggest news circulating in NFL media is about Brandon Aiyuk’s ongoing contract negotiations. The wide receiver wants a big increase in his annual salary ($30 million a year). The 49ers want to keep hold of the Pro Bowler but aren’t ready to meet his demands. As a result, Aiyuk requested a trade on Wednesday, July 17.

The 49ers could face a similar situation with Brock Purdy in 2025 when his rookie contract enters the final year. By then, quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Tua Tagovailoa would undeniably sign extensions, inflating the quarterback market even further—close to $65 million.

Given Purdy’s resume in a short amount of time, he could demand something similar, even though general manager John Lynch claimed they would cross the road when the time came. 49ers beat writer Grant Cohn suggested that the franchise doesn’t need to pay Purdy according to market standards.

[The] 49ers won't have to pay Purdy all that money if they don't want to. They'll hold all the leverage. They can offer him a three-year extension worth $45 million per season. [That’s] well below market value. If he doesn't like it, they can force him to play out the final year of his rookie deal and then franchise tag him twice. And in that case, he woul[d] earn far less than $45 million per season.
Cohn wrote for Sports Illustrated.

The numbers only prove how much the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft has achieved in a short time. Regardless of what a section of the analysts may perceive, Brock Purdy looks set for a massive increase in his bank balance.
